Definition: So, your editor has asked you to write a piece for the "well"? Well, (haha), what's that mean? The well is the portion of the magazine (generally the middle) that carries the feature and longer pieces. Having a piece appear in the well of a magazine is a great thing for a freelance writer. It means you've been tapped for a longer piece (generally) and that you're being asked to write some high quality journalism.

The opposite of the well is the smaller departmental pieces that appear in the front or back of the magazine.

Also Known As: features

Examples: "Your article was of such high quality that we've decided to place it in the well."
