Ways to Keep Warm (Without Turning Up the Heat)

Trying to keep your heating bill down? Here are 22 ways to stay warm, without touching the thermostat:

  1. Dress in layers
  2. Wear wool
  3. Wear thicker socks or slippers
  4. Leave the oven open after you bake
  5. Eat soup and other warm meals
  6. Drink warm beverages
  7. Open curtains and blinds during the day to let the sun in
  8. Close curtains and blinds at night to keep out the cold
  9. Pile extra blankets on your bed
  10. Switch to flannel sheets and a down comforter
  1. Snuggle up in a blanket whenever you're sitting down
  2. Do something active (clean the house, exercise, etc.)
  3. Wear a hat to prevent heat loss
  4. Use a humidifier. Humid air feels warmer
  5. Don't run the bathroom fan after you shower; the humidity will make the house feel warmer
  6. Shut bathroom fans off as quickly as possible to prevent heat loss
  7. Run ceiling fans in reverse to push warm air back down to the ground
  8. Put on clothes as soon as they come out of the dryer
  9. Use rugs on bare floors
  10. Block drafts with weather stripping, rolled up towels or homemade draft stoppers
  11. Keep your fireplace flue closed when you don't have a fire to prevent unnecessary heat loss
  12. Make sure heat vents, registers and radiators are free of obstructions. If they're covered with furniture, the warm air won't reach you – even though you've paid for it
