Uber Visa Card Review

Disclosure: We are committed to recommending the best products for our readers. We may receive compensation when you click on links to products, but this never affects our reviews or recommendations.

One might assume the Uber Visa Card saves its best rewards for rideshares, but that couldn’t be further from the truth. You earn the most bonus points for dining, the next most for hotels, airfare, and vacation rentals. Uber and other online purchases earn bonus points, too, and all with no annual fee.

The Uber Visa Card is a good choice if you ride with Uber often, but it’s best for consumers who spend a lot on dining, hotels, airfare, and vacation rentals.

Because of the card’s high APR, it’s best for people who pay their credit card balance off in full every month.

Although Barclays doesn’t say what credit score you need to qualify for this card, similar rewards cards from other issuers require good to excellent credit.

Pros

  • No annual fee

  • Lucrative earning structure

  • No foreign transaction fees

Cons

  • High APR

  • Terrible balance transfer terms

  • Few ways to redeem rewards

Pros Explained

  • No annual fee: We like the fact there’s no annual fee, but that’s pretty much par for the course among cash-back credit cards. Still, most cash-back cards don’t offer 4% or 3% back in popular categories, so that puts the Uber card above many other no-fee cards.
  • Lucrative earning structure: The Uber Visa shines by giving you top earnings on pricier purchases (dining out and travel purchases). Earning 2% back for online shopping and 1% back for other purchases is just icing on the cake.
  • No foreign transaction fees: Some cash-back credit cards charge a foreign transaction fee on purchases made abroad. This one doesn’t, making it a solid option for international travel.

Cons Explained

  • High APR: If you carry a balance on this card, you could end up paying a lot in interest.
  • Terrible balance transfer terms: Many balance transfer cards offer 0% interest for a year or more, but this card doesn’t. You’ll pay the same high APR on balance transfers as you do on purchases, and you’ll have to pay a balance transfer fee of 3% (minimum $10) to boot.
  • Few ways to redeem rewards: As with most cash-back credit cards, your redemption options are limited. You can cash in your points for cash, statement credits, gift cards, or Uber Cash, but not travel or merchandise like you can with some cards.

Uber Visa Card Signup Bonus

The Uber Visa Card gives you a $100 bonus if you make $500 in purchases within the first 90 days of your account.

We like this bonus because it’s easy to earn—you only have to spend $167 every month for three months in a row. However, some other cash-back cards offer a $150 sign-up bonus for the same spending requirement.

Earning Points & Rewards

You’ll earn 4% back on dining out and Uber Eats; 3% back on hotels, airfare, and vacation rentals; and 2% back on online purchases including shopping, streaming services, and Uber rides. You will also earn 1% back on all other purchases made with your card. There are no limits on how much you can earn in any category.

The average American household spends $3,365 a year on restaurants, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. At a 4% earnings rate, that much spending on dining out alone translates to $135 in cash back. If you’re also spending thousands of dollars on travel every year, you’ll likely rack up hundreds more in earnings, thanks to the 3% cash-back rate on those purchases.

As long as your account is open and the credit card program is still available, your points will never expire.

Redeeming Rewards

The Uber Visa Card lets you redeem rewards for cash (transferred to your bank), credit card statement credits, gift cards, or Uber Cash. (Uber Cash can be used to pay for rides and Uber Eats orders.)

Each point you earn has 1 cent in value, meaning that 5,000 points can be redeemed for $50 in rewards. Redemptions start at 500 points (or $5) for Uber Cash, and all other redemptions start at 2,500 points (or $25).

Keep in mind that there is a daily limit of $500 when it comes to redemptions for Uber Cash or cash back deposited into a bank account.

Uber Visa Card’s Excellent Perks

This card only offers one benefit we consider superior to what most cards offer:

  • Mobile phone protection: Receive up to $600 in cell phone coverage for damage or theft when you use your Uber Visa Card to pay your cell phone bill.

Uber Visa Card’s Other Features

  • $50 annual credit for subscription services
  • Exclusive access to events

How to Get the Most Out of This Card

Maximizing this card should be a breeze if you use it every time you dine out or order in with Uber Eats. Use it also for travel, Uber rides, streaming services, and online purchases.

For further value, make sure to spend at least $5,000 per year in order to receive the $50 streaming credit (but don’t ever carry a balance, as that will subject you to expensive interest charges). In addition, pay your cell phone bill with your Uber Visa to get the cell phone protection.

When it comes to redeeming your rewards, all options are equal since you get 1 cent per point in value.

Customer Experience

J.D. Power ranked Barclays No. 3 out of 11 card issuers in its 2018 Credit Card Satisfaction Survey, behind only Discover and American Express. The study gave Barclays 806 points out of 1,000. The industry average was 801.

Besides 24/7 customer service, Barclays gives you access to a free FICO score, and it will email you whenever your score changes.

Security Features

Barclays offers standard bank security protections, including text alerts that notify you when a purchase is made, when your payment is due, and when you’re approaching your credit limit.

Our Methodology

  • At The Balance, we are dedicated to giving you unbiased, comprehensive credit card reviews. To do this, we collect data on hundreds of cards and score more than 55 features that affect your finances.
  • Our Reviews Are Always Impartial: No one can influence which cards we review, the way we present them to you, or the ratings they receive. The scores and reviews come directly from the data we collect and our editorial expertise, and we focus on three areas:
  • How Much Does It Cost? With credit card debt at an all-time high, we believe you should know the cost of carrying a balance. Because of that, we give regular purchase APRs significant weight in overall scores, and cards receive low marks if they have an array of pricey fees.
  • What Are the Rewards Worth? Cards accumulate rewards in different currencies—points, miles, cash back—and their values vary widely. To simplify the problem, we built a system that fairly compares rewards and gives them a dollar value. We do this by looking at the ways you can earn and use rewards, which includes evaluating Americans’ typical spending habits and analyzing common travel patterns.
  • Does It Make Your Life Easier? Our scoring system favors cards that accept a wide range of credit profiles and offer simple solutions for things like checking your credit score or contacting customer service. Finally, we give preference to credit cards that have several tools for dealing with fraudulent charges.
  • For every review on The Balance, we hold the credit cards to these standards, and we set the bar high. While we recognize the appeal of splashy features like six-digit sign-up bonuses, our approach ensures that credit cards with the best combination of value, affordability, and accessibility receive the highest scores. See our full methodology for more details.
