Here is a transferable skills list to help you when writing a resume or cover letter, or speaking at a job interview.

What Are Transferable Skills?

Transferable skills are skills that apply to multiple career fields. They are practical capabilities such as problem-solving and critical thinking that are necessary for many different lines of work.

These skills can be acquired over time or through higher education and experience, but what sets them apart is that they are adaptable and can be used in many various settings.

How Transferable Skills Are Acquired

Transferable skills can be developed through classwork, extracurricular activities such as sports or clubs, internships, former jobs, travel and study abroad experience, etc. Many skills can be established through non-conventional work or educational environments, so no experience is too distant.

For example, if you worked at a retail store, you have customer service experience. Did you manage your household budget as a stay-at-home parent? You have finance and budgeting skills. Did you study abroad in France? You speak more than one language and were able to communicate cross-culturally.

Transferable Skills on Your Resume and Cover Letter

These transferable skills should be included on your resume and cover letter if they are skill sets the job requires. It is important to be able to demonstrate and explain how you will be able to apply your skills to a new work environment.

You can also refer to these transferable skills during an in-person or over-the-phone job interview.

Valuable Transferable Skills

Some important skills include the ability to work in a team, strong verbal and written communication skillsdecision making, the ability to analyze data and prioritize work, organization, creativity, technical knowledge, adaptability, and helpfulness.

Required skills will vary based on the job for which you're applying, so also review our list of skills listed by job and type of skill.
