The Best Color Laser Printers for Small Businesses and Home Offices

If your small business needs fast, reliable printing of brochures, stationery, invoices, reports, etc., a laser printer is the way to go and with color laser printer prices steadily coming down, why limit the effect to black and white? One of these top color models can save you the expense and inconvenience of using a printing service by allowing you to make your own professional quality printed documents in color.

Note that if you intend to print photographs an inkjet is a much better choice - laser printers do not have sufficient resolution to make high quality prints of photographs. Note also that these units are print-only - if you have an occasional need for scanning, copying, or faxing, a multifunction printer is the better choice.

The higher priced units in the list tend to have additional features such as automatic duplexing (the ability to print on both sides), higher resolution (1200x1200 dpi), faster print speeds, and larger paper capacity. Understand that pages per minute print speeds (ppm) quoted by the manufacturers are for comparison purposes only and tend to be wildly optimistic (your mileage may vary). Most units have optional paper trays to expand the paper capacity but these tend to be fairly expensive.

Here are my choices for the best color laser printers for small businesses and home offices.

Dell Computer C3760n Color Laser Printer

If you are looking for high performance and great features at an attractive price, the Dell C3760n is an excellent choice. With fast print speeds (up to 35 pages per minute in black and white and color) and a monthly duty cycle of 80,000 pages the Dell 3760n is suitable for high volume printing. Print resolution is 600x600 dpi.

It comes with a 550 sheet input tray and a 150 sheet multipurpose tray. Inputs include USB, Ethernet (wired), and wireless (with an optional dongle). At 17"x19"x15" and 56.44 lbs. it has a fairly large desktop footprint. The C3760N running cost per printed page (paper+toner) is excellent.

Concerned about safeguarding your data? This color laser comes with strong security features with both a 10 digit keypad on the operating panel for password protection and safe server access via LDAP protocol with Kerberos authentication.

At this price automatic duplexing is not included. The more expensive model (C3760DN) model includes duplexing.

Brother HL-3170CDW Digital Color Printer

The HL3170CDW is an inexpensive printer with an amazing list of features for the price and a duty cycle of 30,000 pages per month, making it an excellent choice for moderate printing chores in home or small offices. At 18"x16"x9" and 40 lbs. it is compact, yet boasts a 23 ppm printing speed at 2400x600 dpi - and duplexing!

Its small size means paper tray capacity is limited to 250 sheets, as well as a manual-feed tray for card stock and envelopes. In addition to USB and Ethernet interfaces, the HL-3170CDW includes a wireless interface and supports printing from mobile devices via AirPrint, Google Cloud Print, and other wireless printing protocols.

Cost-saving features include a Deep Sleep Mode which uses less than one watt of power when not in use and New High Capacity Replacement Color Toners.

Lexmark CS517de Color Laser Printer

Automatic duplexing, a range of connectivity features, and reasonable price win Lexmark's CS517de Color Laser Printer a spot on this list. Fast print speeds (32 ppm) and high resolution (1200x1200 dpi) mean you can quickly create high quality color printed documents.

Paper tray capacity is 250 sheets. However, this is expandable with optional additional paper trays so you can increase the input capacity up to 1,450 sheets. In addition to the USB and Gigabit Ethernet ports, wireless connectivity is available via an optional, reasonably-priced wireless print server device that connects to the USB port. It comes network ready with built in security features.

Brother HL-L8360CDW Wireless Color Laser Printer

The Brother HL-L8360CDW is a PC Magazine 2017 Editors' Choice winner and you can see why - it's easy to set up, prints fast (up to 32 ppm) has automatic duplexing, and great connectivity via USB, Ethernet, and WiFi interfaces. Mobile printing via AirPrint, Google Cloud Print, Brother iPrint, and Wi-Fi direct is supported.

The paper tray capacity is 250 sheets but you can expand that by adding multiple optional paper trays. With its advanced security features and higher volume duty cycle of 60,000 pages per month, this could be the ideal printer for the small office. Users report that it takes a while to warm up and start but if you can deal with that, you're getting a lot for the price and Brother printers are consistently at or near the top in reliability rankings.

HP Laserjet Pro M452dn Color Printer

Designed for workgroups of three to ten users, the M452dn is an excellent choice in the low to mid price range. It comes very well equipped with automatic duplexing, 600x600 DPI resolution, up to 28 ppm print speed, and a 250 sheet paper tray.  Print quality is excellent.

It is simple to configure, and has USB, Gigabit Ethernet, and wireless interfaces. It is compatible with Apple AirPrint and Google Cloud Print. The duty cycle is 50,000 pages per month.

Samsung SL-C1810W/XAA Wireless Color Printer

The Samsung SL-C1810W/XAA is a very inexpensive color laser printer that produces incredibly sharp detail at a resolution of 9600x600 DPI.  It comes with USB, Ethernet, and wireless interfaces and a 250 sheet paper tray. Connectivity from wireless devices is excellent - NFC device compatibility means you can tap any NFC-enabled smartphone or tablet to the device and it will connect automatically.

Print speed is somewhat slow at 19 ppm and automatic duplexing is not included, but if you are looking for an inexpensive color laser for a home or small business office the SL-C1810W is a top choice.

OKI Data C531dn LED Color Printer

The OKI Data C531dn is a solid performer at a mid-range price point. Print speed is up to 27 ppm color, 31 ppm black and white, and resolution is 1200x600 dpi. It uses LED as a light source rather than a laser.

It comes with automatic duplexing, a long duty cycle (60,000 pages per month) and a very comprehensive warranty. Paper tray capacity is 250 sheets (plus a 100 sheet multi-purpose tray) and interfaces include USB and Ethernet (but no wireless). The small footprint makes it suitable for a desktop although the 48 lb. weight makes it difficult to move around. Overall, the C531dn is a fine choice for a small or home office.
