The Two Top Illegal Immigrant Insurance Issues
The issue of what services illegal immigrants should legally get in America is long and complicated. There are two services that tend to always be at the top of the list of services that really get Americans upset that they are available to illegal immigrants. When American citizens find out that there is free healthcare for illegal immigrants and that illegal immigrants can obtain a driver's license, the citizens of America start the debates.
At first, American citizens can't understand why when we have huge deficits and America's own citizens struggling that free health care is legally provided to illegal immigrants. How could America let illegal immigrants obtain a legal American drivers license; isn't an American drivers license a privilege of being an American citizen? The debates on the two issues of free healthcare for illegal immigrants and illegal immigrants drivers licenses both get pretty hot in the beginning but once American citizens learn both sides of the issues they begin to understand more than the answer is not as clear as it seemed initially.
Let's take a look at these two issues and both sides of the debate:
Emergency Medical Services
Emergency medical services are guaranteed by the Emergency Medical Treatment and Active Labor Act (1986) and require hospitals to provide emergency care regardless of citizenship, legal status or ability to pay. The main reason of cost is why American citizens would not want to provide healthcare for illegal immigrants.
The cost is a large burden and usually is passed on to the taxpayers or as higher healthcare costs for paying citizens. Supporters of emergency healthcare for illegal immigrants want American's to think about what would happen if hospitals refused emergency care to someone because they were an illegal immigrant. What kind of county would the U.S. be if illegal children were denied, could you walk past an emergency room and be fine with that? As American's, we are not willing to let people suffer in that manner and after realizing the reality of no emergency healthcare for illegal immigrants, many agree that emergency health care is needed regardless of citizenship.
Illegal Immigrants Driver Licenses
This issue is usually a shock to most American citizens. Illegal immigrants can get a legal drivers license that is exactly the same as an American citizen's driver's license. It is up to each individual state to determine if the state wants to require proof of citizenship. Most states do require proof of citizenship, but some do not so that means an illegal immigrant can walk into the DMV (Department of Motor Vehicles) and obtain the exact same driver's license as a legal U.S. citizen if they are in a state that does not require proof of citizenship.
This does not seem right to most American citizens and they initially are pretty upset to learn that this is legal. Once those same American citizens learn that without the ability of an illegal immigrant to obtain a driver's license, they would not be able to obtain car insurance. Illegal immigrants are still going to drive and supporters feel that they would rather have illegal immigrant drivers on the road with car insurance than ones without.
