Many students prefer to spend their summers away from home. Maybe the internship you want to do is located in a big city, or maybe you just want to gain experience on what it's actually like living in a large metropolitan area. But living in a big city can be expensive, especially when you’re doing an internship that's unpaid or that only pays for the bare essentials.

A number of college campuses offer temporary summer housing to students who are doing internships.

These housing facilities are usually less expensive and easier to find than individual accommodations you might find on your own. They're maintained and cared for and they're usually a lot safer than a backstreet apartment located in an unknown neighborhood. Living in the city for the summer can be exciting and fun, but it’s best to plan the necessities like housing, transportation, and food long before you buy your ticket to go. Here are a few ideas.
