There are many students who prefer to spend their summers away from home. It may be because the internship they want to do is located in a big city or oftentimes they just want to gain experience on what it's actually like living in someplace like New York, Boston, LA, or Washington DC.

No matter which city you go to living in a big city can be expensive especially when you’re doing an internship that is unpaid or that only pays for the bare minimum and makes it hard to get by.

Temporary Summer Housing Options

A number of college campuses offer temporary housing to students doing internships over summer break. These housing facilities are usually less expensive and easier to find than looking for individual facilities on your own. They are also usually maintained and cared for and can be a welcome relief from finding a back street apartment somewhere that’s located in an unsafe neighborhood with no facilities nearby.

Relocating to a place like New York City can be intimidating especially if you are not familiar with living in a city and what that entails. You will, of course, want to have laundry facilities and a place to buy groceries nearby but if you are not familiar with the neighborhood you could find yourself in a compromising situation.

Some students group together with other college students to save on the costs of renting an apartment. This is also a safer way to venture off to a strange city while interning over the summer.

Living in the city temporarily for the summer can be exciting and fun but it’s best to plan out the necessities like housing, transportation, food, and laundry facilities long before you buy your ticket to go.
