Are you thinking about finding a job teaching abroad? Perhaps this will be your first job out of college, and you are not sure what information to include on your first resume.

Read below for tips on creating a strong college graduate resume for a job teaching abroad. Below is also an example of a resume for a position teaching abroad. The example is for a recent college graduate.

Tips for Creating a Resume for a College Graduate Teaching Abroad

  • Resume or CV? Some international organizations require job seekers to submit a curriculum vitae (CV), rather than a resume. A CV contains some information that a resume does not. Read the application directions carefully, and make sure you submit the right kind of materials.
  • Read the job description. Read the job description very carefully. The description will note the requirements and qualifications for the position. Circle any keywords in the description, and try to include some of these in your resume. For example, if the job description highlights a lot of teamwork in the job, include any experiences in which you worked successfully on a team.
  • Emphasize teaching experience and certifications. Clearly outline any experience you have teaching, including courses in education, teaching experiences, and any teaching certifications. If you have limited teaching experience, you can also include positions as a tutor or even a camp counselor.
  • Highlight international experiences. Employers for teaching abroad programs look for candidates who are comfortable in new, foreign settings. Highlight any experiences you have working, studying, or traveling abroad.
  • Emphasize your education. As a recent college graduate, you likely do not have much work experience. If this is the case, be sure to highlight your education. Emphasize any courses you took related to teaching and education, or related to the field you hope to teach in. Be sure to create an “education” section on your resume that lists your school, degree, your major, and GPA.
  • Note any volunteer work. Because your work experience is likely limited, you can highlight any volunteer experiences that are related to the job. For example, if you volunteered to tutor local high school students, include this information. You might also include related extracurricular experiences as well.
  • Make it easy to read. Avoid decorative fonts and designs that are busy and difficult to read. Keep your resume clean and concise (try to keep it one page long). This will allow the employer to more easily see the information on your resume.
  • Edit, edit, edit. Take the time to thoroughly edit your resume for spelling and grammar errors. Also make sure that your font and style choices are consistent – for example, if you write one section title in bold, all section titles should be bold. You might set up a meeting with a counselor at your college career services office to have someone else read through your resume too.
