Typical Air Force Basic Military Training (AFBMT) Schedule
It takes several weeks of long days in order to create an Airman. In fact, the Mission and Vision Statements of the Air Force Basic Military Training Command are the following:
MISSION: Transform civilians into motivated, disciplined warrior Airmen with the foundation to serve in the world's greatest Air Force
VISION: Develop the next generation of Airmen who embody absolute professionalism!
To achieve these goals of AFBMT, the recruits undergo eight and a half weeks of training located in San Antonio, Texas.
Each week is scheduled, beginning with week zero. The following is a break down of each week as well as the daily timeline to achieve these training goals:
Week Zero - Processing Week - Haircuts, Clothing Issue, Flight and Duty Assignments, and Dorm and Drill Basics are all handled during the "first week" of Basic Military Training.
Your first clothing and equipment will include items for starting training, including combat boots, running shoes, leather gloves, a duffel bag, wool and cotton socks, two towels, a pair of sweatpants, two PC T-shirts, a sweatshirt and other essentials.
Week One - The real training begins. Challenging the recruit both mentally and physically, the newly formed flight will continue processing (medical / dental), The flight will learn how to report and salute, entry control procedures, fitness and nutrition, ID card Issue, drill, weapon issue and parts identification, as well as human relations and cultural sensitivity.
Week Two - Topics include career counseling, warrior role, weapon handling and maintenance, Air Force History, suicide awareness and prevention, comprehensive Airman’s fitness, basic leadership and character, basic situational awareness, cyber awareness. Drill and physical conditioning progress.
Week Three - Training continues and deepens with mental preparation for combat, Law of armed conflict, Air Force combatives, Anti-terrorism / Force Protection, dress and appearance (service dress uniform), and interview sessions with senior personnel.
The process of creating Airmen is well underway.
You receive your and accessories, including U.S. insignia, white T-shirts, long sleeve blue shirts, short sleeve blue shirts, blue pants, a service coat, an all-weather coat, a light weight jacket, two ties, a flight cap, belt and buckle, and low-quarter shoes
Week Four - Recruits start to learn defensive fighting techniques like tactical movement, cover and concealment, as well as lifesaving skills (advanced first aid). Preparing for combat is the goal of training so you will know what to do when under enemy fire. Teaching recruits what you need to know in order to save your life and those of your fellow Airmen.
Week Five - BEAST Week - regarded as the toughest week of BMT. Basic Expeditionary Airman Skills Training (BEAST), Combat Arms Training and Maintenance (CATM), combatives and pugil stick application, and Field Training Exercises (FTX) top off this highly stressful and physical week.
Week Six - Testing Week: Physical Training (PT) evaluation, Written test / evaluation of drill top off this week. Also covered is combat stress recovery, computer base training/Air Force Portal familiarization, career progression and Air Force quality of life, financial management, and more useful training for your career that is well underway.
Week Seven - Graduation Week. Friends and family can attend the formal recognition ceremony of you entering the ranks of the United States Air Force.
Week Eight - Airmen's Week: This is the final step before the new Airmen advance to their assigned technical training.
As listed above, the weeks are different and progress logically throughout AFBMT, however, the daily schedule is fairly typical just with different training segments featured each week.
A Typical Day in AFBMT
The days will vary in what you learn, but the timeline will generally be the same each day. Your day will generally follow this schedule:
|0445||Reveille—time to wake up.|
|0500||Prepare for physical conditioning, or PC.|
|0500-0600||Physical conditioning, which alternates between running one day and aerobic exercise the next.|
|0600-0615||You have fifteen minutes to eat breakfast.|
|0630-0745||Put the dorm in shape and set up. The Air Force refers to quarters as dorms, not barracks.|
|0800-1130||Class time and time for drills.|
|1130-1230||Lunch, though it can be anytime in this period, depending on the day's specific schedule.|
|1300-1700||More classroom instruction or drills—again depending on the day's specific schedule and your training instructor's (TI) plans. *If Winter - PC maybe completed in the mid-day.|
|1700-1800||Dinner, though this time can vary depending on the day's schedule, and how far into basic training you are—the closer to the end, the more time you generally get for things like dinner.|
|1900||Dorm setup for the night, including boot shining.|
|2100||Lights out when you hear "Taps."|
Civilian Clothing, Military Uniforms, and Equipment
You will only wear civilian clothing for a couple of days during Week Zero. When you are issued your clothing and equipment, you are responsible for maintaining the proper appearance during basic. You will mark your clothing and equipment with stenciled name so you can identify it.
