The Sunoco Rewards Plus MasterCard is a co-branded card that offers better rewards and is accepted at more places than the Sunoco Rewards Card, which is accepted only at the company's gas stations. Both cards let you earn points in Citigroup's Thank You program.

The Sunoco Rewards Plus MasterCard Basics

The Sunoco Rewards Plus MasterCard was designed for people who want to earn Thank You points on their Sunoco gasoline purchases.

Only fair credit (660+) is needed to qualify for this rewards card, but it doesn't come without its costs.

The Sunoco Rewards Plus MasterCar comes with a 16.99 percent APR, while the regular Sunoco Rewards Card carries a whopping 23 percent purchase APR. Both have a penalty APR of 29.4 percent. This rewards card also comes with some common fees:

Sunoco Rewards Plus MasterCard Review

The Sunoco Rewards Plus MasterCard is a better deal than the Sunoco reward card, which is accepted only at the company's gas stations.

Both cards let you earn points in Citigroup's Thank You points program.

But it's important to keep in mind that the rewards aren't as rich as they might appear. First of all, your points are based on how many gallons - not dollars - of gas you buy at Sunoco. Since the average price of gasoline is between $2.50 and $3.00 a gallon, that's a big difference.

Unfortunately, you don't earn the full 10 points per gallon until your third gas purchase at Sunoco each month; the first two purchases only earn you three points per gallon. The Sunoco Rewards retail card pays you only two points per gallon.

If you get the Rewards Plus MasterCard, be aware that you will get two statements per month - one for your Sunoco purchases, and one for your MasterCard purchases. Make sure you pay both of them.

If you apply for but aren't accepted for the MasterCard, you might be offered the Sunoco Rewards card instead.

Recommendation

Unless you gas up at Sunoco multiple times during the month - say, more than once a week - it's probably not worth it. Instead, if you want gasoline-based rewards, get a credit card that rewards you a bonus for gasoline purchases - and one based on dollars, not gallons. There are lots of those.

Credit card pricing, terms, and rewards are subject to change. Check the card issuer's website for the latest credit card deals.
