Affiliate marketing promotion may often feel like walking on eggs, because you don’t want to come across to your subscriber list and blog readers as too aggressive or “salesy”, even though you need to be confident and assertive to make money.

Your goal as an affiliate marketer reflects the above dilemma, but in a positive way:

What is the best way to reach my income goals and at the same time optimize my “Know, like, and trust” factor with my readership?

Fortunately, there is no great mystery about the art of promotion. Much of what you may have learned or read about classic “real world” promotion tactics will apply to online affiliate marketing. Let’s take a look at the basics:

1. Promote Affiliate Products That You Use and Believe In

You’ve got to look yourself in the mirror every day and deal with your conscience, so choose affiliate products that you would buy yourself without hesitation.

Before the cash starts rolling in, new affiliate marketers must work hard to establish their credibility. If people trust your opinion and believe its authenticity, the rest of affiliate marketing, i.e. technical details, merchant payments, customer follow-up etc. will mostly take care of themselves.

E-books and information products are well-suited for affiliate marketing beginners in this respect.

They are relatively cheap across the board (fifty dollars on average in most niches) so buying a personal copy won’t set you back a lot. You are then in position to offer an honest opinion on the book, and cater your message to the target audience.

Sometimes, it’s possible to contact the merchant directly via your affiliates’ page or other means to ask for a review or complimentary copy.

Some vendors are quite welcoming of beginners, but you should still be prepared to explain why you deserve a free product. Talk up your platform, passion for the niche in question, and how you plan to promote the merchant’s items.

Early access to a merchant’s new offer can be critical in forming business alliances for the future, and beating the competition to earn more sales.

2. Describe Personal Experiences with the Product to Your Audience

In niches like Nutrition, Personal Fitness and various sports hobbies like fishing, relating personal results from the use of affiliate products will humanize you and help build a rapport with your list.

For example, perhaps you successfully followed a 30-day cleansing strategy from a book; shedding ten pounds and making you feel better than ever. Tell your prospects about it! It will soften the hard sale aspects of your delivery and convince them that you are the real deal (Note: Show them ‘Before’ and ‘After’ pictures or screen shots if you have them).

In short, your product reviews will be more compelling and authentic, and you will have more material for use as list content (e-mail series) and bonus options later on.

3. Select the Promotion Methods that are Appropriate for Your Platform

Affiliate marketers have many promotion tactics at their disposal, and often test several of them for any given campaign. Some of the more popular methods include:

Each of these methods has their strengths and weaknesses, and selection often comes down to personal preference, past results and actual testing.

For beginners, I really recommend e-mail marketing and list building because it’s a proven way to attract “fans” that will “know, like, and trust” you, and ultimately be happy to purchase products off your links. Combined with a WordPress blog to anchor your promotion efforts, you will be able to build lasting and mutually beneficial relationships.
