Naval Support Unit (NSU) Saratoga Springs is located in Saratoga Springs, New York, one of the most scenic areas of the country, "the Capital Region of New York State". Located between the Catskill and Adirondack Mountains, this area is a year round playground for tourists and locals alike. NSU Saratoga Springs supports most commands within the New York State Capital Region and is located approximately 35 miles north of the state capital, Albany, New York.

The primary mission of the installation is to support the Naval Nuclear Power Training Unit (NPTU), Ballston Spa. NPTU Ballston Spa is located in the town of West Milton, Saratoga County, about 10 miles southwest from NSU Saratoga Springs.

NSU Saratoga Springs is located in Saratoga County, one of the most scenic areas of the country, near the capital of New York State. Located between the Catskill and Adirondack Mountains, this area offers numerous recreational opportunities.

Directions from Albany Airport to Naval Support Unit Saratoga Springs.

When leaving the Albany airport parking lot turn left onto Watervliet Shaker Road (RT.155). Stay in the left lane and follow it to Interstate 87 north. Take Interstate 87 north to exit 13N, Saratoga Springs. Take Route 9 north to Route 29 west (which is Washington Street). Follow 29 west for approx. 2 miles. The base is located on the right hand side.

Population/Major Units Assigned

NSU Saratoga Springs serves an active duty population of approximately 3,000. In addition there is a large NY Air National Guard Base in Scotia, NY, as well as a Naval Operations Support Center (NOSC) and several Recruiting Stations within a 50 mile radius.

Temporary Lodging

There is no Billeting, Navy Lodge or BEQ at Saratoga Springs. Contact the Navy Housing Office for as list of Hotels/Motels.

During the summer season (mid June to early September) Hotel/Motel costs are above government per diem rates, so plan accordingly. Always ask for a military rate.

If you are entitled to Temporary Lodging Expense (TLE) with your move, you may wish to use all of your 10 days here because of the high costs. TLE can be used at either end of the PCS move for a total of 10 days in CONUS.

Government housing at NSU Saratoga Springs is Public Private Venture (PPV) available for military members stationed at the Naval Support Unit Saratoga Springs and the Nuclear Power Training Unit (NPTU) Ballston Spa managed by Balfour Beatty Communities, a small residential community situated in the foothills of the Adirondacks and is a short drive away from historic downtown Saratoga Springs as well as NPTU Ballston Spa.

PPV housing is available to all active duty service members with or without dependents, officer or enlisted. Active duty members with dependents have priority. Housing consists of 100 units of two-bedroom apartments, 50 units of two-bedroom townhouses and 50 units of three bedroom townhouses. Twenty five units are furnished. There are four apartments per building, with each apartment having a one-car garage. The townhouses offer bi-level living, one-car attached garage and a fenced yard.

Applications for PPV housing must be submitted to the Navy Housing Office on a DD form 1746. Applicants will be placed on the PPV Preferred Referral List. The application can be submitted in advance; however, your control date will be your detachment date. For additional information contact the Navy Housing Office at 518-886-0200 x 124.

There are no barracks at NSU Saratoga Springs. Single service members are authorized to live in the local community including PPV housing. Active duty with family members have priority. Housing is open to Officer and enlisted. The Navy Housing Office will help you secure housing on base or in the local community. Contact 518-886-0200, x124.

Contact the Housing Office in advance if Exceptional Family Member (EFM) accessible housing is required. All housing units have air conditioning. There is a priority policy for incoming special needs families. Contact housing at 518-886-0200 x 124 to be put on their priority list. Click on photos to see the housing units. There are no electric generators available for families in housing.

Schools

There are no on-base DODDS schools at this installation.

This area boasts an excellent education system. There are many public, religious private, and non-denominational private schools. The public schools have free bus transportation and provide transportation to some of the private schools. The Navy Family Service Center has statistical information available for the Capital District Region schools. Call the Information and Referral Specialist at (518) 583-2900 for more information. Please have the school name and address available when you call. Since this is not a centralized base, you will need to check with your realtor/renting agent for the appropriate school district. Theyralso maintain a listing for pre-school and other related educational activities, and they have access and information on Home Schooling.

Child Care

The Child Development Home (CDH) program is a Navy-wide program designed to train, license, and support family members of military sponsors interested in providing child-care in their homes both off base and in government housing. For a list of specific providers contact the Child Development Home Storefront Manager at (518) 886-0200 x9-161. During off-duty hours a list of current providers will be available on voice mail (518) 886-0200-#8-#3).

Each CDH provider is an independent business person responsible for offering (full-time, part-time, and hourly) care to children 6 weeks to 12 years in a loving, learning environment. There are a limited number of providers for children under the age of 2 years old.

The CDH program offers the direct cash subsidy payment program to offer affordable child-care to active duty military families. Parents of full-time children enrolled in the CDHP will pay a fee based on their total family income. Hourly care fees are determined by the rank of the military sponsor.

Medical Care

Military Medical and Dental services in this area are limited. Assigned active duty military are seen at the Navy Medical and Dental Branch Clinics in Ballston Spa. Pharmacy services are open to family members and retirees. Tricare questions should be addressed to the Health Benefits Advisor at the Branch Medical Clinic 884-4102/13.

Naval Health Clinic New England (NHCNE), Naval Branch Health Clinic (NBHC) is located on the second floor of a three story Medical Facility at the intersection of West Avenue and Church Street in Saratoga Springs.

All treatment time at the Brance Dental Clinic for other than active duty personnel is on a "space available" basis. This means that active duty dental treatment demands must be taken care of first, then remaining time (if any) can be used to treat those in the "space available" category.
