Sample Retail Management Internship Cover Letter
How to Write a Great Cover Letter for an Internship in Retail Management
Your resume is a crucial pitch when you're seeking an internship or any other job opening, but many students overlook the importance of the cover letter that accompanies it. Drafting a good cover letter is just as critical to the process of securing an interview. Without one, your prospective target might put your resume aside without even moving on to read it.
It's Your Voice
Think of your resume as a listing of facts.
In that respect, it's dry. It simply states what is. Yes, an advanced degree in rocket science is awesome and yes, it will probably catch someone's attention. But in the end, it's just that – a few words citing the degree you hold. You have to convince your reader to look at your resume to see it...unless you also mention it in your cover letter.
Your cover letter is you. It's your voice, your professionalism and a peek at the real person behind the resume.

Dear Ms. Korn,
I would like to express my interest in the Liz Claiborne Summer Internship recently posted on UCLA’s Career Services website. I believe that Liz Claiborne offers the ideal environment in which I can pursue my goals of becoming successful in the field of business and retail management.
My qualifications, dedication, and intellectual curiosity, combined with my interest in advancing my knowledge of the fashion and design industry, make an excellent candidate for this internship.
Over the last three years at UCLA, I have demonstrated excellent problem solving and analytical skills. I have a good understanding of management and accounting concepts and can effectively manipulate tools such as spreadsheet, Stata, SPSS, and databases to pull together data to solve problems and present information.
I have also demonstrated my communication, leadership and strong work ethic as well as enthusiasm in my co-curricular activities and jobs while maintaining a high GPA as a full-time work study student.
I have a very strong interest in pursuing a career in business and believe that I possess the ability and initiative to deliver professional input and dedication as an intern at Liz Claiborne. In addition, I have a personal interest in design and fashion and believe that this internship will provide me with an intriguing opportunity to combine my personal interest and academic qualifications. I am very excited about the opportunity to apply the knowledge and skills I have gained as a student at UCLA to a company as prestigious as Liz Claiborne.
I would be delighted to have the opportunity for a personal interview. Thank you in advance for your time and consideration.
Some Final Tips
It's OK to shamelessly plug yourself, but keep it professional. Be open and forthcoming but avoid robust humor, even if you enjoy a great reputation as the class clown. Give your reader a reason to pick up his phone and call you.
