Roadtrippers Seen In Record Numbers This July 4 Holiday

43.6 Million -- Number of the Day

That’s the record number of Americans that AAA predicted will be traveling by car this Fourth of July weekend, another indication that people are eager to get out again as everyday life returns to normal.

That’s up 5% from the previous high set in 2019, AAA said. And even though gas prices are at the highest level in seven years, road trips are expected to make up 91% of the holiday travel between July 1 and 5.

“Higher gas prices won’t deter road trippers this summer,” AAA spokesperson Jeanette C. McGee said in a statement. “Though prices will remain above $3 a gallon, travelers are likely to look for more free activities or eat out less, but still take their vacations as planned.”

Counting all modes of transportation, 47.7 million Americans are expected to travel, which would be the second-highest Independence Day travel volume on record, behind 2019’s 48.9 million, AAA said.
