Is Rising Antivirus Free Edition Worth the Download?

Rising Antivirus Free Edition is a nice free antivirus program. It provides a regular antivirus function but also includes email monitoring.

Though the software itself is no longer updated, its virus definitions stay current through occasional updates.

Important: Rising Antivirus Free Edition provides constant virus protection, also called on-access or resident protection, for free. This means that Rising Antivirus Free Edition can completely replace any commercial antivirus program.

Pros & Cons

Though Rising Antivirus Free Edition is now considered outdated software, it still provides most of what you're probably looking for in a virus protection program:

Pros:

  • Updates definitions automatically
  • Provides email defense (incoming and outgoing)
  • Can run a quick or full virus scan
  • Can selectively scan system memory
  • Integrates with the Windows right-click context menu
  • Able to run a scan when the computer goes into idle mode
  • Supports heuristic scanning
  • Program settings can be password protected

Cons:

  • No firewall is available
  • Program updates are no longer released
  • Some of the additional tools included in it don't work any longer

More Information on Rising Antivirus Free Edition

Here are some additional things worth mentioning:

  • Rising Antivirus Free Edition should work with all versions of Windows (I tested it in Windows 7 without any problems)
  • Monitors and stops backdoor attempts, trojans, worms, and other malicious items
  • A scan can be setup only check files that have been updated in the past 1-60 days so as to avoid scanning every single file
  • The Advanced Scanning settings is where you can choose to automatically delete suspicious files that the scanner finds, as well as to skip over archive files and installation packages that exceed a certain file size
  • Infected files are automatically moved to an isolated area of your computer until you decide what to do with them
  • The Rising Antivirus Free Edition File Monitor (the scanner that actively monitors malicious files) and Email Monitor can be adjusted to favor system resources but not scan all files, or to scan more thoroughly but use more resources
  • Updates can be downloaded and installed automatically or only done so every day, week, or month. You can also disable these updates entirely (this isn't recommended) and update them manually
  • The program settings can be protected with either a password of your choosing or with an authentication code that you must enter before making changes
  • After a scan, you can have Rising Antivirus Free Edition display the results of the scan, exit the program, restart the computer, or shutdown the computer
  • Also included in this antivirus program is a boot sector backup/restore utility

My Thoughts on Rising Antivirus Free Edition

A major problem I have with Rising Antivirus Free Edition is that the developer’s website no longer provides product information or technical support. You can still use the program and stay current with virus definitions, but the website is void of information on product features or how-to instructions.

In the Tools section of this program are some other things you could download if the developer's website was still online, but because it isn't, these tools are just wasted space in the program.

Rising Antivirus Free Edition is still a good program for detecting malicious files, so you can feel free to keep using it if you're still a happy user of it. However, choosing another free anti-malware tool like Baidu Antivirus, AVG, or avast!, all of which are updated more often and do provide support, is probably a better idea.
