Are you ready to let your employer know that you're retiring? It's a good idea to formalize your departure by notifying your employer in writing. The letter can be given to your employer when you inform them you're leaving, or you can turn it in as a follow-up to the conversation.

What to Include in a Retirement Letter

Depending on your job and your relationship with your employer, you may want to offer more than two weeks notice, which is typical for resignations.

Your letter should include the date you are resigning. If you can help during the transition, mention that as well. You can also thank the company for the opportunities you had while working for the firm.

Dear Mr./Ms. Last Name:

I would like to inform you that I am resigning from my position at Coronado College, effective May 15th. Working here has been such a wonderful experience, and I will cherish the memories forever.

I have decided to retire and leave the workforce so I can watch my grandchildren grow up. I have worked at Coronado College for over 20 years, and although those were some of the best years of my life, I am looking forward to the next chapter.

I want to personally thank you for the opportunities you have given me over the years. I have grown personally and professionally, and am very pleased with the work I have done and the students I have worked with. I have thoroughly enjoyed my time with my coworkers and superiors, and I do hope that we will all keep in touch.

If I can be of any help during this transitional time, please let me know. Thank you again for your understanding, and I wish you all the best.

Sincerely,
