The key to accident prevention in retail begins with awareness of basic safety. It's also a great topic for the next staff meeting! Obviously, employee safety is a concern for all retailers, but the biggest mistake retailers make is assuming the people they are hiring already know about safety. In other words, accidents are only part of the problem, often times it is a lack of training. 

Start the store meeting by pointing out the Job Safety and Health Protection (OSHA) poster and any emergency contact numbers posted in the break room or other work area.

These posters are required by law and to be honest, are never read or looked at by retail employees. Making them part of a safety meeting can help resolve that. 

Plan safety demonstrations and provide basic workplace safety guidelines to the group. Be sure to have a copy of the store policy manual on hand as reference. Consider assigning a safety lead on your staff. Ask this person to provide safety trying for the rest of the team. He or she can prepare a 10-minute training as part of your regular meetings. The other benefit of the safety "lead" employee is that more than just you as the retail storeowner are paying attention to this. Poor safety leads to accidents and accidents lead to insurance claims and loss work productivity - and both cost you money. 

Get creative. This topic may be simple common sense for most employees and quite boring, so it will require a little creativity to keep the meeting interesting and informative.

Use any video training aids or consider inviting a safety expert to speak. Many fire departments in local cities offer free training for your store. How cool is it to have a real fireman or police officer doing the training? 

Keep in mind that having a meeting (meaning one time) will never solve any issue for a retailer.

Turnover rates are so high in retail that the reality is the people you just trained will all be gone in six months and a whole new group will have arrived. With that in mind, make safety training part of your new hire process. 

For example, when I had my stores, we used to have them study all of the posters (mentioned above) and materials provided to us from our landlord and vendors on safety. Each day, we finished with a written quiz. And every quick included at least one safety question on it during the 2-week training. This practice made them "pay attention" to safety, but it also impressed upon the new hire that we cared about his or her safety. 

Where can I get good resources for safety training?

First, consider you landlord. As a company, they have tons of safety training posters, videos and resources. Second, look to your liability insurance company. They love to provide you with resources - its helps reduce claims! In fact, some insurance companies will give a discount on your premium for having employees comply with the insurance providers training. Third, there are several safety associations and initiatives for retailers that also provide resources. Not all of them are free, but it is cheaper than creating them yourself.
