Prudent Pet is a newer pet insurance company, owned and operated by pet parents, that makes it easy to choose the coverage you need to protect your dog, cat, or your whole family of pets. The company offers referral bonuses, discounts for multiple pets, and flat-fee wellness plans that cover office visits for routine care.

We reviewed Prudent Pet’s coverage details and exclusions, add-on services, discount pricing, rates, customer service, ratings, and more to help you decide if its plans are right for you.

Company Overview: Flexible Coverage From a Newer Company

Founded in 2018, Prudent Pet is a newcomer to the pet insurance market. Nevertheless, it has quickly become competitive by offering customizable accident and insurance policies.

Prudent Pet offers premiums as low as $100, options for unlimited annual coverage, and an optional wellness rider that covers prescription medications and some curable pre-existing conditions. It also makes it affordable to protect your whole pet family with a 10% discount for every additional dog or cat you add to your coverage.

Because the company is relatively new, Prudent Pet hasn’t collected many customer reviews. Both Trustpilot and Consumer Advocate give the company excellent ratings, with most reviewers praising Prudent’s knowledgeable support staff, ease of use, and fast claims service.

Prudent’s policies are underwritten by United States Fire Insurance Company, which has an A rating for financial stability from AM Best.

Policies Available: Accident and Illness and Accident-Only

Prudent Pet offers customizable accident and illness and accident-only policies for cats and dogs. The company requires you to wait 14 days after your policy begins before you file an accident or illness claim. Any claims filed before the waiting period ends are automatically denied.

  • Annual coverage limit: $10,000, unlimited

Other Add-Ons: Wellness Coverage

To help cover the cost of routine preventive care, Prudent Pet offers two wellness riders that can be added to an accident and illness or accident-only policy. Each plan has a fixed monthly cost for both cats and dogs and covers only a certain amount for each service.

Prudent Pet covers the cost of prescription medications and prescription pet food in its accident and illness and accident-only policies if they’re used to treat covered conditions. This does not include prescriptions for general maintenance or weight management.

Tip

Your pets’ pre-existing conditions may be covered if they go 180 days without symptoms or treatments.

Plan Exclusions: Most Pre-Existing Conditions

Although Prudent excludes pre-existing conditions, it may offer coverage if your pet has been free of symptoms and treatments for the condition for 180 days. This does not apply to ligament and knee conditions.

The following are also excluded from coverage:

Cost: Pricey Premiums and Wellness Coverage

Prudent Pet’s premiums are a bit high, with some quotes coming in between $7 and $20 higher per month than some other providers we reviewed. However, the company offers a 10% discount for each additional pet you insure, and if you refer a friend who purchases a policy, Prudent will send you a $15 Amazon eGift card and donate $5 to Best Friends Animal Society.

Prudent will also refund any premiums you’ve paid if you cancel your policy within 30 days as long as you haven’t been reimbursed for any claims. Residents of New York State are not eligible for Prudent’s money-back guarantee. Finally, you can choose to pay your premiums monthly, quarterly, semi-annually, or annually.

We used the company’s online quote estimator to create the following two policy quotes.

Accident and illness insurance for a mixed-breed, three-year-old, female dog with $10,000 coverage, a $500 deductible, and 80% reimbursement came to $37.15 per month. An accident-only policy with the same coverage terms came to $21.08 per month. Basic Preventive Care added an extra $9.95 per month for $250 of coverage to the accident and illness policy for a total of $47.10 per month.

Accident and illness insurance for a domestic longhair, one-year-old, male cat with $10,000 coverage, a $500 deductible, and 80% reimbursement came to $19.71 per month. An accident-only policy with the same coverage terms came to $14.75 per month. Basic Preventive Care added an extra $9.95 per month for $250 of coverage to the accident and illness policy for a total of $29.66 per month.

Your quote will vary based on the breed and age of your animal as well as the amount of coverage you select.

Important

You can save 10% off your premiums for each pet you insure and get a $15 Amazon gift card when a friend you refer purchases a policy.

Prudent offers standard phone, email, and live chat customer support during regular business hours.

Competition: Prudent Pet vs. Hartville

We compared Prudent Pet to Hartville, which offers similar insurance policies, premiums, and wellness coverage. Like Hartville, Prudent Pet offers accident and illness insurance and set coverage amounts for preventive care. Placed side-by-side, Prudent and Hartville appear to offer the same coverage for roughly the same price.

Hartville does have a slight advantage over Prudent Pet, however, in its wider range of annual limit options, which gives you five choices ranging from $5,000 per year to unlimited, versus Prudent, which only offers $10,000 or unlimited.

However, Prudent does offer some coverage for curable conditions whereas Hartville sticks to a blanket exclusion of all pre-existing conditions. Hartville is also noted for its steep premiums for older pets. For instance, the cost to insure a 12-year-old female, mixed-breed dog with a $500 deductible, and $10,000 in annual coverage is $121.91 per month. The same policy with Prudent Pet is $10 per month less.

We recommend you build a quote with each provider and review each policy carefully to see which one is right for you.

Final Verdict: Good Coverage With High Premiums

Although Prudent Pet has made strong inroads in the pet insurance marketplace in such a short time, it’s still priced higher than most of its competitors. By shopping around, you can probably find another provider that offers the same if not better coverage for lower premiums.

Nonetheless, Prudent Pet still offers some impressive features that make it more competitive. Its coverage for curable pre-existing conditions and prescription food and medication puts it ahead of many of its competitors, and the 10% discount for each additional pet insured is a big benefit.

We would like to have seen Prudent offer a lower deductible as well as a wider choice of annual limits. And while its flat-rate wellness plans are on the affordable end, its coverage limits per service make it hard to know how much you’re saving on routine wellness care.

Prudent Pet has so far managed to please its customers with strong customer service and an easy policy builder and claims process. If it can bring its premiums down and offer a wider range of coverage choices, it will be able to offer comprehensive pet insurance that more pet owners can afford.
