Progressive is the third-largest insurer in the country, so it’s not surprising it offers more coverage choices than many competitors, has a round-the-clock customer service team, and provides a digital shopping experience that’s better than most. The company has long been an innovator in the industry, as it was among the first to introduce concepts such as drive-in claims service, pay-as-you-drive user-based auto insurance, and installment plans for paying premiums. If you’re seeking coverage for not just your car, but your Segway, motorcycle, or golf cart, Progressive may be able to help out. Its mobile app is highly praised, and drivers with no recent accidents or traffic infractions will likely find Progressive’s auto insurance rates to be a good bargain.

Progressive Car Insurance Costs
Insurers offer unique rates depending upon individual factors, including your driving record, location, age, your vehicle, and how you use it (business, personal only), typical mileage, credit-based insurance score, and other factors that can vary between U.S. states. The amount of insurance coverage you want to purchase also impacts your premium. Like many insurers, Progressive also uses insurance scores where possible to do so. Insurance scores are derived from your credit score, accident history, and insurance history

Progressive Car Insurance Availability
Progressive provides auto insurance in all 50 states, though discounts and coverage vary by location. Most states require drivers to carry minimum liability limits, and that’s the lowest selection Progressive will quote.
Drivers seen as high-risk because of a history of accidents, multiple traffic violations, or serious infractions like a DUI may be denied coverage by Progressive. Progressive may also decline to cover vehicles with a history of significant natural disaster-caused damage or title issues.
How to Get a Progressive Car Insurance Quote
Some insurance companies provide estimates, but Progressive offers firm quotes. Quotes are available online or over the phone by calling your local agent or customer service at 1-888-671-4405. The online policy discount savings is available even if you start your quote online, then call.
To get a quote, you’ll need to answer quite a few questions, including your employment status, occupation, and how you use your vehicle–pleasure, business, commercial, farming, and/or ridesharing.
If you already have a car insurance budget, Progressive’s Name Your Price Tool is an efficient way to see what coverage options are available based on what you’re willing to pay.
How to File a Claim with Progressive
Policyholders can use Progressive’s mobile app, online account, or customer service line at 1-800-776-4737 to file a claim. You’ll be asked to provide basic information about what happened and then choose whether you’d like to complete the repairs with Progressive or receive a payment for the estimated repair cost.
If you want to repair your car with the company, you’ll schedule it with a network repair shop or a mechanic of your choice. If your vehicle is totaled, Progressive pays your car’s market value minus your deductible to the vehicle owner, lender, or both.

It’s in the top five in Texas, the Northwest, New York, Central, and New England regions. While average isn’t bad, it’s certainly nothing to brag about, especially when competitors like GEICO consistently outrank Progressive.
In the 2019 Auto Claims Satisfaction Study, Progressive’s ranking was #16 out of 22, which was below industry average but still in J.D. Power’s “about average” category.
According to the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC), most complaints in 2019 concerned claims handling, specifically concerning delays, unsatisfactory settlements or denials of claims. Progressive earned a 0.89 on the NAIC Complaint Index in 2019, just a bit better than the industry average of 1.0. That was far better than the 1.56 it scored in 2017.
Shopping for insurance usually isn’t a pleasurable experience, and Progressive was #8 out of 22 in digital shopping in the 2020 J.D. Power Digital Experience study. Progressive came in at #7 out of 8 for overall quote-to-purchase experience in the 2020 U.S. Insurance Shopping Study.
In the digital study, Progressive ranked at #11 out of 19 for service. The Balance strives to give consumers unbiased, comprehensive reviews of auto insurance providers. To ensure that our content helps you make the right insurance decision for your needs, we review each insurance provider’s coverage options, discounts, customer service and satisfaction, and financial stability.
In addition, we look at the cost of a basic policy for a Ford Explorer—one of the most popular cars in the U.S., but not so popular that it’s among the most stolen cars and therefore, more expensive to insure. Our fictional applicants live in a residential suburb of Minneapolis. Insurance premiums in the suburbs generally tend to be between the higher rates in urban areas and lower premiums in rural regions. We chose Minnesota because it has about average exposure to severe weather incidents (it has snow, but no hurricanes or tornadoes), and its rates are in the middle of the pack compared with other states.
To give an idea of the range of premiums available to different risk profiles, we got quotes for a middle-aged woman with a clean driving record and a young male with a couple of accidents. Your situation may be quite different, but our quote is not meant to cover every kind of situation; instead it’s a sample of what premiums could be with this provider. We use the same profile for every car insurance provider we review, to give the best chance of comparing providers’ costs across the board.
