Note: Agnitum, the company that released Outpost Security Suite, was acquired by Yandex in 2015. Though you can still download the antivirus program through the link below, support and updates will end December 31, 2016.

Outpost Security Suite is an advanced, free antivirus program. It supports a firewall and email scanner as well as automatic scanning and automatic virus definition updates.

What I like most about Outpost Security Suite is that it provides lots of customizable settings, giving you serious control over the firewall and virus scanning settings.

Important: Outpost Security Suite provides constant virus protection, also called on-access or resident protection, for free. This means that Outpost Security Suite can completely replace antivirus software from companies like McAfee and Norton that charge for their software and for yearly access to updates.

My Thoughts on Outpost Security Suite

There are so many advanced settings in Outpost Security Suite that listing all of them here would be very overwhelming. For example, the automatic USB scans even let you specify how large the drive must be before a scan is initiated.

Also, all four scan profiles - full, quick, removable media, and context menu - can have all their settings modified. A quick scan, for instance, can optionally scan particular file types, skip files larger than a certain size, scan archives, scan the Windows registry, and, among others, check for malware in system folders.

I think Outpost Security Suite is actually pretty easy to use. The firewall settings are straightforward, and though there are many advanced options you may not use or change, it's great that they're there for people who do want to control them.

All these features show just how advanced and flexible Outpost Security Suite really is, which is absolutely wonderful for a program that's free. And the always-on virus scanner is definitely a plus.

Note: You must register Outpost Security Suite before you can use it, and this can be done by entering your name and email on the registration page. This is completely free to do, so just copy the key you receive in the email and paste it into Outpost Security Suite.
