Review of Outlets at Conroe in Conroe, Texas
The Possibilities of Finding Good Deals May Still Exist
Outlets at Conroe Review
The Conroe outlet mall (if you can call it a mall) used to be a lively center with around 45 popular name-brand outlet stores. Unfortunately, like several smaller regional outlet centers, Outlets at Conroe is riddled with empty retail spaces.
Why the center is not more successful is a bit baffling. It is located about 40 minutes from Houston and just 20 minutes from the George Bush Intercontinental Airport.
Lake Conroe is a beautiful 22,000-acre lake that attracts people living in Houston who want to get away. The area is also known for being a resort for golfers, with eight golf courses. It has everything that should make it the perfect spot for an outlet mall, except for outlet stores.
Craig Realty Company, a shopping center development firm based in Newport Beach, California, purchased the outlet mall in 2004. Craig Realty specializes in upscale factory outlet centers around the country, but apparently, they have not been able to turn Outlets of Conroe into one of them. Instead, the center has suffered one store closure after another.
The downturn began when the outlet mall anchor store, Liz Claiborne Outlet, shut its door. After that, it was like watching dominoes fall - just one store after another closing down.
Today there are 20 stores left at the center, with Nike Clearance Store acting as the anchor.
Prices on the merchandise at the outlet run 30 - 40 percent off retail, as it should.
The outlet management seems to be making an effort to keep activity flowing by holding events throughout the year that is geared more to local traffic than area visitors. Events include Photos with the Easter Bunny, trick or treating, and Tree Lighting.
Even Vacant Outlets Have Deals
With all that said, stopping at the Outlets at Conroe might be a good way to find some pretty cheap name-brand merchandise. Outlet centers that do not get a lot of traffic often have better selections, because they have not sold out of everything.
Discounts, Coupons and Outlet Store Sales
Also advertised is a free VIP Savings card which customer can get from the center's service desk located in Suite 163A. The savings card offers additional discounts at some of the stores. You can also log onto the Outlets at Conroe website and view the sales that are going on in the stores.
Shoppers can check out the sales going on in the stores, and print any available coupons, by visiting the "Sale" webpage on the outlet mall's website.
For AAA members, Outlets of Conroe offers the Preferred Customer Savings card for free. Just show you card at the Customer Service desk to get the extra savings.
MasterCard holders receive additional savings for shopping and dining. Head to the Customer Service desk to the details, and don't forget to bring your MasterCard.
Outlet Store List
The list of outlet stores, although lacking in numbers, (see below) is not entirely shabby and if I lived in the area or had business in Conroe, I would make a point to periodically check out the stores. Would I drive there from Houston specifically to shop? Probably not, unless Craig Realty can attract more outlet stores.
