California-based Mercury Insurance offers auto coverage in 11 states, both online and through a network of independent agents—but California represents 86% of Mercury’s business. Mercury’s car insurance is basic, but the company provides a mileage-based insurance option and is one of the few insurers offering mechanical protection insurance. However, there aren’t many other add-on coverages you can use to customize your insurance.

Mercury Car Insurance Coverage
Mercury offers all the standard car insurance options:
- Liability (bodily injury and physical damage you cause to others, required in most states)
- Personal injury protection (PIP)
- Collision protection
- Comprehensive coverage
- Medical payments coverage
- Uninsured and underinsured motorists
Mercury may offer the following optional coverages, depending your location:
- Rental car reimbursement (if you carry collision or comprehensive)
- Ridesharing insurance
- Roadside assistance
- Mechanical protection
Most of Mercury’s optional coverages are fairly common, and Mercury doesn’t offer as many endorsement options as some other insurers. But Mercury is one of the few companies offering mechanical protection insurance (MPI), which can take the place of an extended warranty on a new or used vehicle. Mercury offers several MPI plans depending on your vehicle’s make, model, age, and mileage. If you think you might want to buy MPI, it’s best to get a quote for it before your vehicle’s factory warranty expires—you’ll have more options and will likely get a better price, according to the agent we spoke with. As always, read the fine print to understand what is and isn’t covered.
Factors That Affect Your Cost
Insurers offer unique rates depending upon individual factors, including your driving record, location, age, your vehicle and how you use it (business, personal only), typical mileage, credit-based insurance score, and other factors that can vary between U.S. states. The amount of insurance coverage you want to purchase also impacts your premium.
Mercury Car Insurance Discounts
Mercury offers several auto insurance discounts that help reduce your costs, although availability may vary based on your location:
- Youth discounts: Good student
- Loyalty discounts: Multi-car, multi-policy (save up to 15% on both car and home insurance)
- Safety discounts: Anti-theft, good driver (based on a claims-free record), ticket-free
- Payment discounts: Auto-pay, pay in full, e-signature, MercuryGo telematic program (Texas only)
- Other discounts: Professional discounts (including educators, scientists, government employees, engineers), RealDrive mileage program
RealDrive is a mileage-based coverage option that provides a 5% discount when you sign up. While many mileage-based insurance programs ask the driver to use an app, Mercury’s program simply asks you to report your mileage each time you renew your policy, an agent told us over the phone. In contrast, MercuryGo (currently only available in Texas) is a usage-based app that provides feedback on your safe driving habits.
Mercury Car Insurance Availability
Mercury offers car insurance through independent agents in 11 states: Arizona, California, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Nevada, New Jersey, New York, Oklahoma, Texas, and Virginia.
How to Get a Mercury Car Insurance Quote
You can get a quote with Mercury online, by calling 800-956-3728, or by contacting a local agent. If you request a Mercury car insurance quote using a zip code from a state other than those listed above, Mercury will connect you with a partner insurance aggregator, which provides you with offers by email.
Mercury allows you to self-identify as male, female, or non-binary when getting a car insurance quote in certain states.
How to File a Claim with Mercury Insurance
You can file a claim with Mercury by calling the 24/7 claims hotline at 800-503-3724.
An agent will ask about the incident and review your policy coverage with you. If you’ve paid for roadside assistance and rental car coverage, Mercury will be able to arrange for towing or repairs, and help you get a rental car. If you prefer, you can choose your own mechanic, or you can work with one of Mercury’s preferred auto shops.
Mercury works with preferred repair shops and guarantees their work for as long as you own the vehicle.

#15 out of 19 for service
#5 out of 22 for shopping
The 2020 J.D. Power Auto Insurance Satisfaction Study ranked Mercury Insurance 13th out of 15 insurers in California for overall auto insurance satisfaction. It wasn’t ranked in other regions. With a score of 787 out of 1,000 in customer satisfaction it ranks well below the California industry average at 821.
The 2020 J.D. Power Auto Claims Satisfaction Study ranked Mercury Insurance at #22 out of 24 insurers. This study is based on the responses of auto insurance customers who settled a claim in the previous six months, and may indicate customers weren’t as satisfied with their claim experience as customers of other companies.
Digital Service and Shopping Experience
Mercury offers online account services for basic needs like printing an ID card, viewing your policy information, contacting your agent, or paying your premium. It has an app listed on the Apple App Store, but Mercury doesn’t promote it on its own website. These basic services may be the reason Mercury was ranked 15th out of 19 insurers in the service category of the 2020 J.D. Power U.S. Insurance Digital Experience Study, with a score 15 points below the industry average.
Interestingly, while Mercury Insurance ranked 11th out of 12 mid-size insurers on the 2020 J.D. Power Insurance Shopping Study, it ranked 5th out of 22 insurers on the digital shopping component of the Insurance Digital Experience Study. This indicates shoppers enjoyed the digital shopping experience in comparison to other insurers.
Understanding a company’s stability is an important aspect of choosing where to buy insurance. Mercury Casualty Group has a financial strength rating of A (Excellent) from AM Best. The financial strength rating is an analysis of an insurer’s ability to meet its insurance policy and contract obligations, and this rating indicates that Mercury is stable and financially well positioned.
Other Insurance Provided by Mercury
In addition to covering your vehicle, Mercury also offers other types of insurance in certain states, with most products available in California:
- Business auto insurance
- Business insurance
- Homeowners, condo, renters, and landlord insurance
- Umbrella insurance
Many other auto insurance companies provide insurance coverage options for a wide array of vehicles, including classic cars, RVs, boats, and even Segway scooters. If you want to insure vehicles other than your daily driver, you’ll need to look into a different insurer.
Compare Other Car Insurance Reviews
Experts recommend that you shop around for insurance by getting quotes from at least three companies. If you live in a state where Mercury sells car insurance, you might want to compare your quote to those from these other companies:
- Mercury car insurance may be good for residents of 11 states who want basic car insurance for their passenger car, or who are interested in mechanical breakdown insurance.
- Mercury Insurance is not ideal for people who want to manage their policy (or make claims) through an app or use extensive online services.
The Balance strives to give consumers unbiased, comprehensive reviews of auto insurance providers. To ensure that our content helps you make the right insurance decision for your needs, we review each insurance provider’s coverage options, discounts, customer service and satisfaction, and financial stability.
