Homes in Mendocino, California

Mendocino was established in 1851 as a lumber town. Today it is a picturesque haven along the sea. Mendocino is quaint, quiet and quirky, sort of a toss up between a small fishing village and a secluded New England cove. Breathtaking scenery is made all the more beautiful by the sound of waves crashing against the shore as morning fog slowly drifts on the horizon.

Most area experts agree that the name Mendocino was derived from Cape Mendocino, which lies at its northern boundary. There is some disagreement as to which 16th Century Spanish Viceroy Cape Mendocino was named in honor of, because there are two likely candidates, both named Mendoza. But Mendocino is a form of the family name Mendoza.

Mendocino is situated on 2 million acres and is home to more than 1,000 year-round residents. Here are photos of a few of its majestic and magical homes.

Once the home of well-known Mendocino artist Emmy Lou Packard, a key player who kept the village of Mendocino from becoming saturated by new construction.

This historic mansion is located on Main Street in the village of Mendocino. It is surrounded by lush gardens and elaborate landscaping. Rooms with a shared bath are available around $100 per night at 2007 prices; more luxurious rooms such as those with a two-person spa can be reserved for a bit less than three times that rate.

Chicken coops once stood where this home is built; it has now been transformed into a paradise

The owner of this home once allowed visitors free reign amongst its floral glory, but the invasion grew out of proportion. Today it is fenced. Although Mr. Sussex does accept donations to help homeless cats -- and a box outside the residence provides a place to deposit such contributions -- even if I didn't love cats, I'd still be tempted to make a donation simply in appreciation for the beauty of this striking and stunning yard.

This B&B is billed as luxury accommodations with fine dining in the heart of Mendocino.

Pets are allowed in certain rooms of this historic home. Built in 1882, each of the six rooms in the main home is filled with antiques. The property includes 7 guest cottages. Room rates for 2007 start as low as $100 and easily climb to about $400 per night, with most reservations requiring two-night minimum. Limo service is also available. Apart from a winery tour, I'm not really sure where else one would take a limo.

This tower is located in the village of Mendocino. It sits alone in a field. It doesn't hold a lot of horizontal appeal, but vertically, it's got pizazz.

Better known as the home filmed for "Murder She Wrote," a television series starring Angela Lansbury

Because of its New England-like homes and windswept coastline, Mendocino was used as the scenery for the fictional Maine town of Cabot Cove in the television series "Murder She Wrote." This 1888 Victorian residence was depicted in the TV show as the home of mystery writer Jessica Fletcher, but is now an elegant bed & breakfast inn. The present owners have named a room in honor of Lansbury called Angela's Suite. Rates are mid-range as compared to other B&Bs in Mendocino.
