Overview

Maxwell AFAB and Gunter Annex are located in Montgomery, Alabama. Maxwell and Gunter Annex are primarily academic-oriented installations educating Entry-level Airmen through Senior-level Officers. Air University (AU) is the main unit at Maxwell and Gunter. Supporting AU is the mission of nearly all other units at the base.

The Wright Brothers established the first U.S. civilian flying school in Montgomery in 1910. In the 1930's, the Army Air Corps Tactical School moved to Maxwell and Montgomery became the country's center for airpower education. Air University continues the proud tradition of educating tomorrow's planners and leaders, in air and space power for the Air Force, other branches of the U.S. Armed Forces, federal government civilians, and many international organizations.

Location/Driving Directions

Maxwell AFB and Gunter Annex are located in Montgomery,Alabama, 162 miles southwest of Atlanta and 82 miles north of Birmingham. Montgomery is situated at the intersection of I-85 (East) and I-65 (North and South).

Driving Directions to Maxwell AFB
Maxwell is located in the northwest corner of the city of Montgomery. Exits from Interstates 85 and 65 leading to the base are marked.

Driving from the East

Take I-85 south; exit at the Day Street exit (exit 171) which leads directly to the front gate, 2-3 miles on the right.

Driving from the North

Take I-65 South into Montgomery, exit at the Day St exit, (exit 172) and the front gate is approximately 1-2 miles on the right.

Driving from the South

Driving from the South, take I-65 North, (exit 172), Take Herron Street exit and turn left at 3rd light onto Bell Street and Bell St Gate is approximately 2 miles on right.

Driving to Gunter Annex
Gunter Annex is located in the northeast corner of the city, if traveling from I65 South or North take the Northern Blvd Exit and take the Gunter Exit off the Northern Blvd on to Congressman Dickenson Hwy and Gunter Annex is on the left.

Airports
Driving From the Airport to Maxwell AFB

If you are arriving from the Montgomery Airport take a right onto Highway 80 and follow the signs to I-65 N Downtown. Take I-65 N Downtown exit. Take Herron Street exit and turn left at 3rd light onto Bell Street and Bell St Gate is approximately 2 miles straight then veer right.

Driving From the Airport to Gunter Annex

To Gunter from Montgomery Airport, take I-65 north and exit at Northern Blvd Exit. Take northern Blvd until you see the exit for Gunter. Take right at exit onto Federal Drive and Gate is on your left.

Maxwell-Gunter serves a large population made up of over 25,000 active duty, guard and reserve, family members, civilians, contractors, and retirees. In addition, more than 20,000 students attend Air University schools each year.

Maxwell Air Force Base is home to Air University and the 42nd Air Base Wing. The 42nd Air Base Wing mission is to provide the foundation for success to the Air Expeditionary Force, Air University, 908th Airlift Wing, 754th Electronic Systems Group and other tenant organizations.

Temporary Lodging

Military members PCS-in to Maxwell are authorized 30 days in temporary lodging. Military members PCS-out are authorized 7 days. Reservations can be made at University Inn for families inbound on PCS orders to stay in one of the Temporary Lodging Facilities (TLF). Those who obtain accommodations will be allowed to stay up to 30 days if quarters are available. Families may also stay in transient officer and airman quarters on a space available basis (with TDY incoming personnel having priority over the facilities). Space available reservations may be made 24 hours in advance of your arrival. If space is available, the reservation may be made for up to three days. After the third day, your stay is on a day-by-day basis. The University Inn typically has a very high TDY for most of the year. The best months for availability are usually November and December.

The Maxwell and Gunter lodging facilities consist of 41 buildings and 2,300 rooms. There is lodging at both Maxwell and Gunter. All rooms are provided with a television, telephones, and refrigerators, and many are equipped with a small kitchen facility.

Directions to Maxwell Lodging: From I-65 South, take the Clay Street exit, from I-65 North, take the Herron Street exit. Follow the signs to Maxwell Air Force Base. Enter the Bell Street gate on Maxwell Blvd. Follow Maxwell Blvd to LeMay Plaza. Take a right on LeMay Plaza and University Inn will be located on the right, Building 682, 450 North LeMay Plaza, directly behind the fitness center. Directions to Gunter Lodging: From the Main Gate (Congressman Dickinson Blvd): Enter the Main Gate on Turner Blvd. Take a right on Spaatz St and a left onto Morris Ave. Take a left on Williamson St. The Lodging office is located on the first floor of Bldg 1017. Housing

Maxwell-Gunter Air Force Base (AFB) has 723 family housing units that have been privatized and conveyed to a private owner, Pinnacle Hunt Communities. The units, located on both Maxwell and Gunter Annex, consist of row-type, one and two story duplexes and single family dwellings. All units are equipped with stove, refrigerator, garbage disposal, dishwasher and central heat and air. A referral can be obtained from the Maxwell Housing Office to take to Pinnacle Management office to apply for privatized housing. Assignments are made by Pinnacle and rent is based on the member's Basic Allowance for Housing (BAH). Military personnel, E-1 and above with accompanying family members, may apply for privatized family housing. The housing list for which you are eligible is dependent on the member's rank and bedroom requirement.

Maxwell-Gunter has 2, 3, and 4-bedroom homes available. Waiting times can vary depending on individual requirements and preferences.

Military personnel, E1 and above, with dependents, are authorized to submit an advance application for privatized housing at any time after they have received Permanent Change of Station (PCS) or Active Duty orders for Maxwell AFB. The application may be submitted on DD Form 1746, Application for Assignment to Housing, through their current housing office or by calling DSN 493-5718. A copy of your PCS orders must accompany your application. Please include in the remarks section of the application that you would like your application referred to privatized housing.

Enlisted dormitory room assignments can be made in advance by your sponsor. The dormitories include private rooms, furnished with microwaves, refrigerators and new furniture with semi-private bathrooms and showers. Each dorm has a large, fully furnished day room, complete with a giant-screen TV, VCR, Surround Sound stereo equipment, pool and ping-pong table. A laundry facility, equipped with washers and dryers is located in each building. Outdoors, the dorms have a basketball goal, sand volleyball court, gas and charcoal grills, large picnic area and patio. The dormitories are located within walking distance of all base facilities.

Child Care

The Maxwell-Gunter Child Development (CDC) Program provides quality care for military and civilian children ages 6 weeks to 5 years (or until they start kindergarten). The program consists of two child development centers, one at Maxwell and one at Gunter Annex. Parents interested in contacting the programs may call 334-953-6667 or DSN 312-493-6667 for the Maxwell CDC, or 334-416-3185 or DSN 312-596-3185 for the Gunter CDC.

The Child Development Centers are open from 6:30 am - 5:30 pm, Monday-Friday. All programs are closed on federal holidays.

Personnel who are re-locating to Maxwell-Gunter AFB may request care by completing a DD form 2606. This form may be sent to the center prior to arrival with an expected date for needing care.

Programs Offered include: Full-time care for children 6 weeks- 5 years of age, Part-day Enrichment Program at the Maxwell Child Development Center only for children 3-5 years old of stay at home parents,
and Hourly care on space available basis.

The cost for full-time care is based on Total Family Income. The fees range from $59 to $126 per week. Part-day enrichment fees are also based on Total Family Income.

There may be waiting lists in each of the programs. It is best to call the program to find out the up to date information. It usually takes longer to get infant care than the other age groups.

The Maxwell CDC and Youth Programs are open the first Friday each month from 6:00 pm - 10:00 pm while the Gunter Programs are open the third Friday of each month. This program is sponsored by the Air Force Aid Society and referrals must be made by commanders, first sergeants, Family Support/Family Advocacy, a medical advisor, chaplain, or CDC directors. This free program is for families who are dealing with stressful situations in their lives. Reservations must be made one week in advance and there must be a minimum of eight children signed up for this program for the centers to be open.

Schools

There is one DDESS Elementary School on Maxwell AFB. Students in grades 4 yr old preschool - 6th grade who reside in permanent housing on Maxwell AFB and Gunter Annex are entitled to attend the DOD Elementary School located on Maxwell AFB.

Students living on base in grades 7-12 are zoned in the Montgomery County Public School System. Students at Maxwell are zoned for Carver Senior High School and McIntyre Middle School. Both are located approximately 4 miles from Maxwell. Bus service is also provided. Students living on Gunter Annex are zoned for Lee High School and Goodwyn Junior High School. Each is approximately 5 miles from Gunter Annex and bus service is provided.

Schools in the area surrounding Montgomery, Prattville, Millbrook, and Wetumpka educate children in grades kindergarten through 12. There are three county public school systems serving this area: Montgomery County School System; Autauga County School System; and Elmore County Schools. Transportation is provided to students enrolled in the public schools. All County public schools are accredited by the State of Alabama and the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools. A standard academic curriculum is available to students in all grades, and vocational centers serve those who are technically oriented. Innovative and challenging programs for the intellectually gifted and academically talented begin at the elementary school level and extend into high school where there are many advanced offerings. In addition, special schools serve blind, partially sighted, deaf, or partially deaf students. Speech therapy is available in all elementary schools, and homebound services exist for youngsters who are unable to attend classes. Special services are also available for students classified as educable mentally retarded, trainable mentally retarded, learning disabled and emotionally conflicted.

There are also a number of private schools, many with religious orientations, located in the Montgomery and surrounding areas. The area's independent and parochial schools are accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools or by the Alabama Independent School Association.

Maxwell and Gunter Annex both have a Base Education Center that is the focal point for all education programs at Maxwell and Gunter Annex. Available degree programs range from Associate through Doctorate. Professional guidance counselors are available for both active duty and dependents on an appointment basis.

There are six colleges and universities in Montgomery with many academic programs available.

Medical Care

The Maxwell AFB Clinic functions as an ambulatory healthcare center. Only outpatient services are provided and this facility does not provide emergency room services. This facility provides primary care with limited specialty care to an estimated beneficiary population of 38,000. Primary care services include Family Practice, Pediatrics, Flight Medicine and Internal Medicine. Additional patient care services provided are Same Day Surgery, Ear, Nose and Throat, Orthopedics, General Surgery, Life Skills, Optometry, Ophthalmology, Active Duty Dental, Women's Health, and Physical Therapy. Maxwell has contracted with Haynes Ambulance Paramedics of Alabama, Inc., which operates directly from the clinic for emergency response.
