2016 UPDATE: Largest U.S. Retail Chains >>

North America is the home of most of the world’s largest retailers. Between Canada, Mexico, and the U.S. retail industries, retail sales totaled 5.25 trillian in 2015.  That number is predicted to grow to $5.8 trillion by 2018.

Canada and Mexico each have their own largest retail chains and both countries have retail companies that do business throughout the world.

But North America's biggest contributions to global retailing mostly reside in the U.S.

Retail business is responsible for two-thirds of the U.S. gross domestic product (GDP) in the U.S., but U.S. retailers aren't satisfied with dominance within its own country borders.  U.S. retail companies have established a substantial presence on every continent, and the world's largest retail company - Wal-Mart - is based in the U.S.

Each year the “Global Powers of Retailing” report from Deloitte Touche Tohmatsu and STORES Magazine, ranking retailers from all over the world according to total revenue. In 2011, the 14th annual list was released, ranking 250 retailers from 32 different countries.

What follows is the largest retail companies from each country in North America - Canada, Mexico, and the U.S. This 2011 list reflects the revenue that was generated in 2010, which was the beginning of a recovery from global economic recession.

While there are many U.S. retail chains which operate retail stores and restaurant brick-and-mortar locations in Canada, few of the largest Canadian retail chains do business in the U.S.  Couche-Tard's U.S. retail presence is the largest, as the owner of Circle K and On the Run convenience stores.

Tim Horton's is another Canada-based retailer with significant presence in the U.S.  In 2014 the iconic Coffee and Donut restaurant chain was purchased by Burger King, much to the dismay of Canadian consumers.  The motivation behind the purchase was to relocate the Burger King corporation headquarters to Canada and avoid U.S. corporate taxes.

The Tim Horton's chain was then expanded in the U.S. in direct competition with iconic U.S. based coffee and donut chains Starbucks and Dunkin' Donuts, but just a year later, 21 Tim Horton's locations that weren't able to compete closed suddenly in New York and Maine.

Other Largest Canadian Retail Chains include:

  • Empire Company (Sobey's)
  • Metro Inc
  • Shoppers Drug Mart
  • Canadian Tire

Mexico
Top Global Retail Ranking #132 – Organizacion Soriana S.A. de C.V.

  • Cash & Carry/Warehouse Club, Hypermarket/Supercenter/Superstore
  • Total number of Mexican retailers on the 2010 Global Powers of Retailing List - - 4

The largest Mexican Retail Chains don't have significant retail operations, but some of the largest retail chains in Mexico are based in the U.S.  The U.S. retail chains doing business in Mexico include:

  • American Eagle Outfitters
  • Forever 21
  • Gap
  • Saks Fifth Avenue
  • Sears
  • Walmart

Several U.S. retail companies have used acquisition of Mexican companies to establish a retail foothold across its southern most borders.  Walmart purchased Mexican retailers Aurrera, Suburbia, and Superama.  Although the Mexican retail industry was not completely enthusiastic about a big American corporation swooping in and buying its way into the country, its preferable to Walmart swooping in and just putting the same three companies out of business.
