JETRO, a program run by the Japan External Trade Organization, is a non-profit government related organization established in 1958 to aid Japan's postwar export drive.  JETRO's core focus in the 21st century has shifted toward promoting foreign direct investment into Japan and helping Japanese SME (small to medium sized) firms maximize their export potential worldwide.

JETRO has eight different branches spanning across the United States and Canada: Atlanta, Chicago, Houston, Los Angeles, New York, San Francisco, Toronto and Vancouver.

 In addition, they service other parts of the world:  Asia, Europe, Oceania, Russia CIS, Middle East, Central and South America and Africa. Their task in the United States is to find American companies with products that can be sold in Japan and to help them do it.

Most of JETRO's staff advisors are from trading companies. They push hard to get the word out that Japan is a big market that can be cracked. Once they get the word out, they assist American manufacturers every step of the way.

Perhaps their biggest claim to fame is helping American companies develop an export culture even before attempting to sell to Japan. Once the export culture is developed, JETRO serves as the highest form of diplomatic envoy for the American company and its contact in Japan.

While JETRO opens doors in Japan, they cannot control critical reactions from customers on product price, quality, timing of delivery and after-sales service. These issues must be taken up and addressed directly with the American manufacturer. Once contact and communications are smoothed over by JETRO's introduction, the American company must rely on fundamental business virtues: patience, adaptability, money, time and flat-out hard work.
