About Legg Mason:

Legg Mason's roots go back to the late 1800's, where they established two separate brokerage firms. The first, Mackubin & Company (which later became Legg & Company), was founded in Baltimore in 1899 by George Mackubin. The second, Mason & Company, was founded in Newport News, Virginia by Raymond A. Mason in 1962. The two firms later merged in 1970 to become Legg Mason & Company, headquartered in Baltimore.

Legg Mason then became a publicly traded company in 1982, traded on the NYSE under the symbol LM, and in that same year established the company’s flagship fund, Legg Mason Value Trust. In 2005 they became a pure asset management firm by exchanging their Capital Markets business for Citigroup’s Asset Management Business. They have since become the 18th largest asset management firm in the world, with total assets under management aggregated to $665 billion. Their subsidiaries include Western Asset Management, Clearbridge Investments, The Permal Group, Batterymarch Financial Management, Brandywine Global, Global Currents Investment Management, Legg Mason Capital Management, Private Capital Management, and Royce & Associates. They currently have over 3,100 employees worldwide.

Internship of the Week:

Product Marketing:

At Legg Mason, the Product Marketing team is responsible for the creation, positioning, and strategic direction of communication for all Legg Mason products, including all materials and content used by the US Distribution offices. These include open and closed-end mutual funds, variable annuity portfolios, 529, and retail separately managed accounts.

These marketing programs are designed to support financial advisors and our sales organization, as well as provide information to prospective and current investors.

Qualifications & Experience:

  • Data updates on marketing materials (includes marking up pdfs and updating data)
  • Compile research from key competitors to help inform strategic objectives
  • Assist head of product marketing on key initiatives, including development of special presentations and other projects
  • Post Marketing content to websites via form submissions (that does not require HTML or any web design work)
  • Manage project dashboard while working directly with project managers for status updates
  • Proofread data checking
  • Support department's administrative process (building marketing & sales kits, making copies, scheduling of meetings, processing invoices)
  • Some project management may be included
  • Applicants must be currently pursuing a Bachelors Degree in Business, Finance, Marketing or a related discipline
  • Must be a junior or senior at an accredited College or University
  • Must possess previous coursework directly related to the open position's need
  • Must have a 3.0 GPA or higher
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office suite, Adobe, Excel, Word, PowerPoint
  • Must be detail-oriented
  • Ability to juggle multiple projects and changing priorities
  • Must be a team player
  • Must be comfortable learning new technologies
  • Must have knowledge of social media knowledge a plus
