Installation Overview: Tinker Air Force Base, Oklahoma

Tinker Air Force Base is named in honor of Oklahoma native Major General Clarence L. Tinker, the first Native American Major General.

Tinker is the headquarters of the Air Force Materiel Command's (AFMC)Oklahoma City Air Logistics Center (OC-ALC) (FHZ), which is the worldwide manager for a wide range of aircraft, engines, missiles, software and avionics and accessories components. The Oklahoma City Air Logistics Center is the largest of 3 ALCs in the Air Force Materiel Command and provides depot maintenance, product support, services and supply chain management, as well as information support for weapon systems, tenant commands, Air Force bases and foreign nations.

Tinker AFB is located in MidWest City, Oklahoma in the "Heart of Oklahoma", just five miles from downtown Oklahoma City. The OKC Metro area has over 1 million residents and is very military friendly with a reasonable cost of living.

The host unit at Tinker is the 72d Air Base Wing (72 ABW) which provides services and support for the Oklahoma City Air Logistics Center and its tenant organizations. The 72d Air Base Wing provides full spectrum installation support to Team Tinker and expeditionary combat capability for the warfighter. Tinker also has two tenant ACC units and hosts 2 Air Force Reserve Wings. The 552 ACW is responsible to the commander of Air Combat Command for the operations, maintenance, logistics, training, and combat support of E-3 AWACS aircraft in support of combatant commanders. The 3d CCG provides deployable communications, computer systems, navigational aids, and air traffic control services anywhere in the world in support of the Air Force, Department of Defense and other U.S. commitments.

Tinker is also the home of the Navy's Strategic Communications Wing One (TACAMO), a Navy Air Wing which is fully integrated in the Air Force Base, and employs over 1,300 active-duty sailors and 100 contractors to provide maintenance, security, operations, administration, training and logistic support for the Navy's E-6B Mercury aircraft fleet.

The base has more than 26,000 military/ family and civilian employees and is the largest single-site employer in the state of Oklahoma.

The Indian Hills Inn provides lodging service for Tinker AFB. Use of the facilities is available to all authorized personnel traveling on official orders to the installation as well as Space Available travelers.

To reserve a room at the Indian Hills Inn, call and give the reservations your dates of arrival and departure, some pertinent personal information, the purpose of the visit and the number of a major credit card if you plan to arrive after 6 p.m. Travelers on official orders to the installation may make reservations 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. 

Tinker AFB also has a Fam Camp that is operated throughout the year and offers sewer, water and electric hook-ups, a dump station, restroom, shower facilities and a laundry room. A fishing pond is located at the campground and is stocked with catfish, sunfish and bass.


Tinker Military Family Housing is operated by Balfour Beatty Communities who assumed responsibility for the daily operations for base housing. For single service members, Tinker has fifteen dormitories There are a total of 1360 rooms currently. Each dormitory has laundry facilities, day rooms which have pool tables and other board games. 

Child Care

The Tinker Resource and Referral Office is a “one stop shop” for childcare needs at Tinker AFB. This office manages the waiting list for the East and West Child Development Program, School Age Program, Family Childcare Program, and the Extended Childcare Program. 

There are two Child Development Centers located on Tinker AFB. The spaces filled on childcare waiting list are taken from Both the East and West Centers. This office cannot give parents choices of child development facilities. When contacted with an offer of childcare, the sponsor must be ready to either accept or decline. Declining an offer of childcare will take the child off the waiting list.


Tinker Elementary, is a part of the Mid-Del School System, designated to serve kindergarten through sixth-grade students on base and those affiliated with the military.

Tinker AFB is situated in the Mid-Del School District. Residents living on the installation will attend:

Tinker Elementary (grades PreK-5)
Jarman Middle School (grades 6-8)
Midwest City High School (grades 9-12)

There are no schools on the installation; however, Tinker Elementary is located just outside the gates.

The Base Education Services Center offers a wide variety of services to military personnel and their dependents. On-base programs include: General Education Development (GED) preparation; English-as-a-Second-Language (ESL); Adult Basic Education (ABE) classes; and undergraduate and graduate degree programs.

Medical Care

The 72d Medical Group provides ambulatory surgery and outpatient care services at Tinker AFB. The clinic hours of operation are 7 am until 4 pm, Monday through Friday.

The 72d Medical Group supports the wartime and in-garrison medical capability of HQ Air Force Sustainment Center, Oklahoma City Air Logistics Complex, the 72nd Air Base Wing, and all other organizations assigned to or located on Tinker Air Force Base.
