Huobi Global is an international cryptocurrency exchange that allows users to buy, sell, and trade supported cryptocurrency. It also offers the ability to earn interest by staking crypto or locking crypto into a pool to earn free crypto airdrops. Huobi Global supports nearly 350 crypto, with more being added regularly.

We’ve reviewed Huobi Global’s platform, fees, user experience, customer service, available crypto, and more to determine if it’s a good option for crypto investors and traders.

Investing in cryptocurrencies, Decentralized Finance (DeFi), and other Initial Coin Offerings (ICOs) is highly risky and speculative, and the markets can be extremely volatile. Consult with a qualified professional before making any financial decisions. This article is not a recommendation by The Balance or the writer to invest in cryptocurrencies nor can the accuracy or timeliness of the information be guaranteed.

Company Overview

Huobi Global was founded by Leon Li in 2013, originally based in China. In 2017, after China’s crackdown on cryptocurrency exchanges, Huobi Global headquarters were moved to Singapore, then ultimately the Republic of Seychelles. Huobi Global is available in most countries around the world, but it does not support a few countries, including the United States and Japan (though users in Japan can use Huobi Japan instead).

Huobi Global offers crypto-to-crypto trading, with a very large selection of supported assets and reasonably low trading fees. The platform is designed for active traders and institutional investors, offering limit, stop, and trigger orders, as well as margin and futures trading. Institutional traders can access OTC trade desks, derivatives, and custom trading tools.

U.S. residents cannot trade on Huobi Global, though trading was available on until January of 2020, when all U.S. residents were required to withdraw their crypto assets.

Cryptocurrencies That Trade on Huobi Global

Huobi Global offers access to nearly 350 cryptocurrencies, giving users one of the largest selections of crypto on a centralized exchange. Crypto offerings include popular options such as Bitcoin (BTC), Ethereum (ETH), Ripple (XRP), Dogecoin (DOGE), and Polkadot (DOT). New cryptocurrencies are also being added regularly, and you can view Huobi’s full list of supported assets.

Huobi also offers its own exchange token, Huobi Token (HT), and token holders can receive fee discounts.

Trading Experience

Huobi Global offers an advanced trading experience, with interactive charts, limit and stop orders, as well as margin and futures trading.

For margin trading, users have access to a smaller pool of crypto to trade, but they can use up to 5x leverage when trading. For futures trading, Huobi Global offers the ability to long or short trade supported cryptocurrencies, or participate in perpetual swaps, which is a type of derivatives contract.

Huobi Global offers reasonably low fees for trading crypto, but higher fees for those wishing to purchase crypto with a credit or debit card. Fiat deposits (such as U.S. dollars) are free, but users pay trading fees.

Huobi Global offers a peer-to-peer (P2P) marketplace for users to buy and sell crypto directly, with no additional fees.

Huobi Global Trading Fees

Huobi Global charges fees based on a maker-taker fee model, with discounts available for high-volume traders with HT token holdings. You’ll pay different fees depending on whether you are a maker or a taker in the transaction.

There are two fee structures for trading: one for general accounts and one for Professional Accounts. Professional accounts require a very high trading volume (over 1,000 BTC every 30 days) as well as a larger HT holdings requirement (at least 2,000 total). Here’s a breakdown of each trading schedule on Huobi Global:

Huobi Global offers standard security features, including two-factor authentication (2FA), cold storage, and identity verification. It also has systems in place to help prevent DDOS attacks, and it holds a reserve of Bitcoin (BTC) for any security breaches that result in lost client funds.

Here are the details of a few of the security features offered by Huobi Global:

  • Cold storage: Huobi Global storage 98% of user crypto assets in offline cold storage wallets that require multiple signatures. This keeps client crypto off the internet, away from would-be attackers.
  • Account freeze: Users can self-initiate an account freeze if they suspect fraudulent activity.
  • Two-factor authentication (2FA): Users can enable 2FA using Google Authenticator to further secure their account with a randomly-generated 6-digit password.
  • Bitcoin reserve: Huobi has a 20,000 BTC reserve in offline storage available to pay back users in the event of an unforeseen cyber attack.

Opening a Huobi Global Account

Keep in mind you need to be 18 years of age and located in a supported country to open a Huobi Global account. New users start the signup process by providing an email address and password. Once a user’s account is verified via email, they are asked to verify their identity by providing personal information, such as address and birthdate, as well as submitting a photo ID and a selfie. Verification can take up to 7 business days.

After verification, users can deposit funds or cryptocurrency and begin trading. Huobi also gives its customers the option to earn interest by staking crypto or by depositing funds into a Huobi Earn account.

Customer Service

Huobi Global offers customer service via email or live chat, and it's one of the few exchanges offering 24/7 chat support on its platform. That said, live chat support is only available on the mobile or desktop app, and not the Huobi website. Users can also submit their phone number using the chatbot on the website to have Huobi contact them directly over the phone.

Huobi Global provides a vast library of help articles, though they are poorly organized. It also offers educational articles and tutorials on its Huobi Learn platform, which is quite extensive.

Customer Satisfaction

Customer reviews for Huobi Global are mixed. Several reviews report problems withdrawing funds and identity verification issues. This seems to stem from the fact that Huobi Global allows users to deposit funds prior to completing KYC verification—users cannot withdraw funds before fully verifying their identity. While customer support is responsive, users express frustration in having to repeatedly submit identification documents to gain access to deposited funds.

As with any crypto exchange, users should always complete account setup and identity verifications before depositing any funds into the exchange.

There are no formal rating agencies for cryptocurrency exchanges. All user reviews are self-reported and may not be 100% accurate.

Account Management

Huobi Global allows users to buy, sell, and trade crypto using its website of one of the Huobi Global apps. Users can log in to their dashboard, deposit crypto or fiat funds, and purchase crypto, spot or margin trade, or trade futures (such as perpetual swaps). Huobi Global also offers ways to earn crypto rewards through staking, deposits, or even pooling funds to earn airdrops of new crypto.

Huobi also offers a desktop app for Windows and mobile apps for iOS and Android devices. Users can log into the app and access all of the trading tools available on the regular website. The apps also come with 24/7 live chat support, which is not available on the website.

How Huobi Global Compares to Other Cryptocurrency Companies

Huobi Global is the sixth-largest cryptocurrency exchange in the world (by volume). Huobi Global also offers margin and futures trading, and reasonable trading fees.

Huobi Global offers one of the largest selections of cryptocurrency on any centralized exchange, and also offers loans against crypto assets. Huobi Global is not available in the U.S., but it supports most countries around the globe. Here’s how Huobi Global compares to a large crypto exchange in the U.S.

Huobi Global vs. Kraken

Huobi Global and Kraken support margin and futures trading. Each offers low fees for high-volume traders, and both also cater to institutional investors, with OTC trade desks.

Compared to Kraken, Huobi Global offer more crypto for purchase and trading, including its own native token.

Here are a few other differences between Huobi Global and Kraken:

  • Kraken’s trading fees are slightly higher than Huobi Global’s trading fees.
  • Huobi Global supports close to 350 cryptocurrencies, while Kraken supports over 65.
  • Kraken offers phone support during business hours, while Huobi Global does not.
  • Huobi Global offers crypto pooling to earn rewards, while Kraken only offers staking.

Huobi Global gives advanced crypto traders access to a large selection of crypto, as well as margin and futures trading with very low fees, but is not available to U.S. users. Kraken, on the other hand, offers a simple way for beginners to purchase crypto, but its fees are relatively high. Kraken is also one of the only crypto exchanges that offers U.S. users the ability to trade on margin.

Final Verdict

Huobi Global is a great exchange for non-U.S. residents who want access to a very large selection of crypto with low fees. It offers margin and futures trading, as well as the ability to stake, lend, or deposit crypto for rewards. It also offers the ability to take out loans against your crypto assets.

That said, Huobi Global has some concerning reviews related to identity verification issues and the inability to withdraw funds. It’s also not a great option for beginners, as its basic trading view includes a screen full of charts, active order books, and crypto jargon. Overall, Huobi Global is a good option for advanced traders, but beginners may want to look elsewhere.
