How to Take a Selfie Just Like a Supermodel

Selfies. Love them or hate them, they’ve officially taken over the planet. They’re snapped in restaurants, at the dentist, in airplanes, in bathtubs, in space, and in the White House bathroom. And if you’re Cara Delevingne, they’re even snapped on the runway!

The point here is this: Selfies are here to stay, so you might as well master them. Practice like crazy and try out these tricks to take your selfies from simple to stunning.

Find the Light

When it comes to looking your best, it’s all about using natural light. If you’re indoors, stand next to a window for a soft, natural look. And if you’re outside, aim to take your selfie during sunrise or sunset, when the light is less intense and more beautiful. Just make sure the light is in front of your face, not behind you. Doing this will minimize shadows and give your face a youthful and healthy glow.

Angle Up and Turn Your Head Slightly to One Side

If you’ve ever wondered why top models and other celebs rarely take straight-on snaps of their faces, consider this: A good selfie is all about working your angles. Hold the camera just above eye level, pick your favorite side (everyone has one!) and turn your face slightly to either the left or the right. This little trick will instantly slim your face and hide any signs of a double chin.

Beautify the Background

Nothing ruins an amazing selfie more than a pile of dirty laundry or an unmade bed.

So before you snap away, find a simple, clutter-free background that won’t distract from what really matters: your beautiful face.

Call Up a Friend

Selfies are awkward for so many reasons. They’re always too close to your face, there’s usually a stray arm in the way, and you’re trying so hard to get the perfect shot.

And to make matters worse, you’re usually alone.

That’s why selfies are so much more fun when they’re taken with a pal. You’ll laugh, get a little silly, and end up with a photo that’s natural, not embarrassing.

Try New Things

Don’t be afraid to switch up your poses, experiment with lenses, and play with your look. Selfies are all about having fun, after all. If you’re stuck for inspiration, be sure to check out some of your favorite models on Instagram and Twitter (Karlie Kloss, Cara Delevingne, and Miranda Kerr are masters of the selfie).

Ditch the Mirror

Although mirror selfies are great for showing off your whole outfit, they’re not without their downsides. For one, nobody wants to see a photo of you in your bathroom, nor do they want to see your filthy bathroom mirror (or your toilet, for that matter). What’s more, bathrooms are notorious for their terrible lighting. And even if you manage to find a mirror that’s not in a bathroom, it’s still impossible to hide your iPhone.

So, while it’s perfectly acceptable to fine-tune your posing in front of a mirror, it’s best to leave your phone elsewhere.

Get Click Happy

The more photos you take, the merrier! It’s rare to get the perfect shot the first time, so take as many as possible to ensure you get a flawless photo.

Remember, it’s easy to delete the awful ones and pretend they never happened.

Edit, Edit, Edit

Just because selfies come off as fun and spontaneous doesn’t mean you can’t edit them. Go ahead and add a cool filter, crop out parts you don’t like, or throw it in a cute frame.

No Duck Face. Ever.

Unless you are a Victoria's Secret supermodel, it's very hard to pull off an attractive duck face. For a more flattering way to achieve killer cheekbones, simply put your tongue on the roof of your mouth and give a slight closed-mouth smile.
