Learn how to make your own crackers, and you'll never settle for store-bought again. You can make crackers in a half hour or less and save big bucks on artisan products that can cost over $10 for a package.

Your homemade crackers will dress up a meal of soup at home or the office. They will wow your guests or make you the star of the potluck when you serve them with cheese tray or spreads. They don't have to look perfect, that's the beauty of it.

So long as you practice enough to get them the right thickness for the best flavor and crunch, it's fine to have odd shapes and rough edges.

You control the type of flour, oil or butter used as the base and the amount of salt. You can make vegan crackers, using oil rather than butter. You can use non-GMO flour. Try the gluten-free recipes so you or your guests who are avoiding wheat flour have a crispy option. You can control the amount of salt, reducing or eliminating it or making them as salty as you wish. Play with adding different herbs, spices, and cheese to your crackers.

Your homemade crackers are suitable to give as gifts, in a plastic bag tied with a ribbon, perhaps with the recipe attached. However, since they won't have any preservatives, they have a short shelf life. You would want to recommend eating them within a week, or freezing. Frozen crackers may be a little wilted when you thaw them, but can be refreshed with a minute or two in the oven.
