It's easier than ever to learn sign language for free thanks to the thousands of resources available online. You can now learn to sign from the comfort of your own home completely on your own schedule.

Sign language can be useful for people of all ages in all different circumstances. If you're just learning sign language, wanting to learn more signs, or even if you're wanting to teach your baby how to communicate with sign language, there are plenty of resources available to help you.

Below I've put together a list of resources to help you learn sign language for free. This includes free online sign language classes, free sign language apps, printable charts of signs, and a list of free ways to teach your baby sign language.

Classes to Help You Learn Sign Language for Free

A great way to learn sign language for free is by taking a free online course in sign language.

These free courses will teach you sign language through use of games, videos, puzzles, quizzes, diagrams, and photos, making sure that you learn to sign through a variety of methods.

You'll move through each unit learning new signs and strengthening the signs that you already know, learning both common phrases and single letters.

Use These Free Apps to Learn Sign Language for Free

A convenient way to learn sign language for free is by downloading a free app.

These apps will take you through learning signs by repetition and quizzes.

Marlee Signs (iOS)- Download this app for lots of useful sign language resources. The whole app is video-based, and shows you how to sign any word letter-by-letter. Plus, there's a library of conversation starters, numbers, letters, and other common words.

ASL Coach (iOS)- This is another app for iOS that teaches you the very basics of sign language. Learn the letters of the alphabet and numbers 1-9 with pictures.

ASL American Sign Language (Android) - Flip through the this app to see how to sign every letter of the alphabet using pictures. You can start from A and move through to Z or you can get random letters to mix it up a little.

Sign Language! (iOS) - With this free sign language app, you can learn the basics like numbers and the ABC's, but also over 20 full sentences and a small selection of idioms/phrases, all through watching videos. Sentences include conversational feedback, feelings and emotions, classroom sentences, and sentences that involve meeting new people, among others.

Spread Signs (Android) - This app is simply a searchable dictionary full of over 200,000 videos that tell you how to sign each of its words/phrases/sentences.

Free, Printable Sign Language Charts

This list of free, printable sign language charts will give you instant reference when you're learning sign language.

Common Words - This PDF file has a set of common words, like What, How, Hungry, Bathroom, Woman, and Food, being signed that you can print off. Instructions for how to sign are below most of them.

Alphabet Fingerspelling - There are two sets of pictures here that you can print off for learning the alphabet in sign language. Both sets have the letters on the hands, but they also have a version without the letters for practice.

Individual Letters - These are large, printable letters of the alphabet represented in sign language. One way you could use these is to print them off and place them next to words that start with that letter for passive learning.

Numbers/Common Words/Letters - Similar to the printables from above, there are four images here that you can print off for one-word questions (How, Which, Where, etc.), essential expressions (e.g. Yes, Please, Thanks, Goodbye),  the alphabet, and numbers 1 through 10.

Free Online Sign Language Games

Have fun while you're learning sign language with this list of free online games.

Sign the Alphabet - Identify the letter or number that is signed to you and select the correct answer from the multiple choice options. Play level 2 to see if you can answer the questions without multiple choice options.

Choose the Sign - You're given random signs and you must select the right answer from the ones given. There's also a 2nd, 3rd, and 4th section for similar questions.

Name the Color - Can you name all 18 colors before the 15 minute timer is up?

What's the Number? - A number is signed to you and you must provide the correct answer. You can set a speed for how quick or slow it takes for the sign to disappear from the screen. You can play with numbers from 0 through nearly a billion!
