The NASBITE (National Association of Small Business International Trade Educators) Certified Global Business Professional (CGBP) certification provides a benchmark for competency in global commerce. The certification also demonstrates an individual's ability to conduct global business at the professional level necessary in today's highly competitive borderless environment.

Here we take a look at how to become a certified global business professional and what are the benefits.

How the NASBITE CGBP Process Works

The NASBITE site allows you to: Upload your qualification documents, wait for approval about acceptance, take the exam and wait for approval of your membership, predicated on passing the certification.

About the Exam

The NASBITE CGBP exam comprises of 150 multiple-choice questions, derived from the CGBP tasks and knowledge statements. You have three hours to complete the exam, although you should plan on spending anywhere from 3.5 to 4 hours at the test center.

Note: If you do not pass the CGGP exam on your first attempt, you are allowed to retake the exam as early as the next convenient test date. If you do not pass the exam on your second attempt, you must wait at least 12 months before retaking the exam. Though there is no limit on the number of times you may retake the exam, additional attempts must be at least 12 months after the prior exam date.

Benefits to Earning the NASBITE CGBP Certification Credential

The NASBITE CGBP certifies that a candidate is competent in the following four primary domains:

1. Global Business Management

2. Global Marketing

3. Supply Chain Management

4. Trade Finance

Within each area are the following five "threads," which cross into all four areas listed above:

1. Documentation

2. Legal and Regulatory Compliance

3. Intercultural Awareness

4. Technology

5. Resources

When you receive the NASBITE CGBP designation, you may use the credential logo and wordmark on resumes and business cards identifying yourself to employers and the public as an individual proficient in global commerce.

For companies, the certification establishes a professional development goal for current and future employees. The credential also helps individuals diversify their skills in global commerce and ensures they understand a broad range of topics rather than just the specific field within international trade that they have experienced.

Qualifications

In addition to passing the NASBITE CGBP exam, you must also qualify through college-level studies or work experience to gain your GCBP certification.

College-level studies

You must earn credit for two years of college-level courses. The courses can be in any field. A degree does not have to have been earned. Candidates who have received any two-year, four-year or postgraduate degree automatically qualify for the CGBP designation, assuming they have passed the exam.

For candidates who have not received a degree, they must indicate on their application where they have studied and how many hours (credits) of college credit have been received. For most colleges and universities using the credit-hour system, this would mean at least 32 hours of classes must be successfully completed.

Work (international trade) experience

There is another way to receive your GCBP certification besides having college-level studies.

You can elect to receive the credential by passing the exam and evidencing two years of work experience in the field of international trade. Check with NASBITE to find out how you show evidence of your work experience.

This work experience must be directly related to international trade in any of the four domains (as noted above). Relevant work experience includes, but is not limited, to international sales, international freight forwarding, international banking or international customer support.
