Our Take

Haven Life Insurance is a newer life insurance agency backed by MassMutual and makes buying term life insurance easier by offering an online application process for two term life insurance products, including one that doesn’t require a medical exam. Haven Life Insurance is a great option for applicants who want simple coverage at a competitive rate, but the company won’t serve those seeking permanent life insurance, hoping to customize their policy with a variety of riders, or looking to bundle multiple insurance policies.

Haven Life Insurance offers two term policy options, one of which never requires a medical exam. Haven Life Insurance makes it easy to get a quote and apply for coverage online.

We researched Haven’s financial stability ratings, customer satisfaction data, policy offerings, customer service, online tools, and rates to help you compare the life insurance policy options that Haven offers with plans from other providers.

Company Overview

Haven Life Insurance was founded in 2014, but as of July 1, 2021, its policies are being underwritten by C.M. Life, a subsidiary of MassMutual, one of the largest life insurance agencies by market share with more than 160 years of industry experience. The company was co-founded by Yaron Ben-Zvi after a frustrating experience trying to purchase life insurance. Its primary goal is to give families easier access to life insurance policies.

Headquartered in New York, Haven Life sells policies in all 50 states and Washington D.C.

Available Plans

Haven Life offers two term life insurance products. If you’re in good health, you might get a better rate for Haven Term but if you want to forego a medical exam, you can opt to apply for Haven Simple.

Haven Term

Haven Term is a medically underwritten policy issued by MassMutual. There’s an online quote and digital application, but a medical exam will be required in most cases. Haven Term is available to applicants ages 20-64 and comes in face value amounts between $250,000 and $3 million. Anyone between the ages of 20-49 years can choose a term of 10, 15, 20, or 30 years. Those between 50-64 can choose terms of 10, 15, or 20 years. Premiums stay level for the life of your policy.

Should you pass away during the term, Haven will pay your beneficiaries a lump sum payment. You’ll also have access to an accelerated death benefit and, in most states, a benefits package known as Haven Life Plus. The package includes perks such as a free living will, a fitness app subscription, and discounts at CVS MinuteClinic.

Haven Simple

Haven Simple offers a digital purchasing experience without a medical exam. Policies are issued by C.M. Life Insurance Company, a subsidiary of MassMutual. This particular product is not available to residents of CA, DE, SD, ND, or NY.

Applicants age 20-55 are eligible for coverage, which comes in face value amounts between $25,000 and $500,000. You can choose a term of 5, 10, or 15 years, and your premiums will stay level for the duration of the term. This policy also includes an accelerated death benefit.

If you’re in good health, you’ll likely get a lower premium if you choose Haven Term.

Available Riders

Riders or endorsements are add-ons to an insurance policy that typically cost extra but allow you to customize your coverage. For example, some life insurance agencies offer a child life rider or a long-term care rider. Haven Life Insurance has limited customization options, but the company does include a couple of attractive riders with their policies.

Accelerated Death Benefit

This rider is included at no additional cost with both of Haven Life Insurance’s term products and provides access to a portion of the death benefit should the policyholder be diagnosed with a terminal illness.

Haven Life Insurance policyholders are entitled to 75% of the lump sum or $250,000, whichever comes first, to use for medical expenses, final preparations, or any other needs. This would decrease the death benefit paid to the beneficiaries and also decrease the premium to reflect the lower face value.

Haven Life Plus

Haven Life Plus is a benefits package included with Haven Term policies. It’s not available to residents of NY, FL, SD, WA, or ND, and it isn’t included with Haven Simple policies. The package includes the following:

  • A free, legally valid online will from Trust & Will
  • A yearly subscription to Aaptiv, an on-demand fitness app
  • A yearly subscription to Timeshifter, which helps you cope with jet lag
  • A LifeSite subscription for storing and sharing important documents
  • A 15% discount at CVS MinuteClinic

Haven doesn’t offer permanent coverage. If you think you might want to convert your term policy to permanent coverage later on, you should go with another company.

Customer Service: Plenty of Options During Business Hours

Should you need to reach customer support, you can do so weekdays between the hours of 9:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. ET. You can get in touch via the online form or live chat or by phone at 1-855-744-2836.

Customer Satisfaction: Very Few Complaints

Haven Life is owned by MassMutual, which has an above-average customer satisfaction ranking in J.D. Power’s 2020 U.S. Life Insurance Study. While it’s not the top-ranked life insurance by J.D. Power, customer service reviews from third-party websites are favorable, and MassMutual has far fewer complaints than expected with the NAIC for a company of its size.

The NAIC uses a complaint index of 1.00 to indicate the industry average, so anything above that shows a higher than expected number of complaints based on the company’s size. But MassMutual had a complaint index of just 0.14 in 2020 for its individual life insurance products. Despite the company’s size, there were only 16 total complaints filed in 2020.

Financial Strength: A++ (Superior)

As noted, Haven Life Insurance is a subsidiary of MassMutual, which has the highest possible financial stability rating from AM Best. That’s important because a company with a high rating is more likely to be able to pay claims far into the future. MassMutual is one of the most reputable companies in the industry when it comes to financial strength.

Cancellation Policy: Industry Standard

By law, all life insurance agencies must offer a 10-day free-look period, which means if you cancel your policy within 10 days of signing up, your paid premiums will be refunded. Haven Life Insurance is no different than other agencies in this regard. If you’d like to cancel your policy, you can do so by phone.

Price of Haven Life Insurance: Competitive

Haven Life Insurance reports that a healthy, 35-year-old male seeking a 15-year, $250,000 policy would pay just $13.45 per month for Haven Term or $15.75 per month for Haven Simple.

Our quote for a 45-year-old female buying a $1 million, 20-year Haven Term policy was about average, between $86.32 and $167.29 per month. At Ladder, the same coverage would cost $3.32/day, and at Bestow, it would cost an estimated $76.83 per month. People buying high coverage amounts may find cheaper quotes elsewhere, especially with a medical exam.

Haven makes it quick and easy to get a quote for Haven Term or Haven Simple, but it’s only an estimate. You’ll find out your actual rate when you apply.

How Haven Compares to Other Life Insurance

Haven Life Insurance has relatively limited product offerings compared to other life insurance agencies. It doesn’t offer permanent coverage or a variety of riders, and you can’t get a discount for bundling with other insurance products. However, Haven remains competitive in the world of no medical exam life insurance policies, offering higher coverage limits and better pricing than many other providers.

Haven vs. Bestow Review

Haven Life Insurance and Bestow both offer 100% online coverage options without a medical exam, and pricing is very similar between Bestow and Haven Simple. However, there are some key differences between the two companies:

  • Bestow offers higher coverage limits and more term options when compared to Haven Simple.
  • Bestow doesn’t offer a medically underwritten policy, and applicants willing to take a medical exam might get cheaper rates with Haven Term.
  • Bestow offers a 30-day free-look period.
  • North American Company for Life and Health Insurance issue Bestow’s policies. The insurer has an A+ financial strength rating from AM Best, but it’s not rated in J.D. Power’s 2020 U.S. Life Insurance Study.

Although both providers offer good coverage options, those who want higher coverage limits without a medical exam will be better served by Bestow, and applicants seeking smaller, medically underwritten policies at a low cost should go with Haven.

Final Verdict

If you’re looking for easy online life insurance, particularly if you’re in good health and don’t need millions in coverage, Haven could be a great choice for you. The agency has superior financial stability ratings and several indicators show customers are pleased with the company.

However, Haven is not the right choice for people seeking whole or universal life insurance, a customizable policy with riders, or a bundled solution for all their insurance needs. Anyone who might want to convert their term policy to a permanent policy will also be better served by another provider.

If you’re looking for term coverage, you should also compare your quote with Haven to rates from a few other companies. Though Haven’s pricing is competitive, other companies may offer lower rates based on certain individual factors.
