While the company underwrites its own car insurance, GEICO acts as an agency to help you find homeowners insurance from its network of partner companies. Indeed, its homeowners insurance options might be best for those who are already car insurance customers, and who can take advantage of multi-policy discounts. However, that does leave you on the hook for researching the insurance options GEICO provides to make sure it’s a good fit for you.

GEICO Standard Home Insurance Policy

GEICO doesn’t have a standard homeowners insurance policy. Instead, it reviews your needs and searches its partner insurance companies to find you the best match based on underwriting criteria

GEICO works with more than 30 major carriers for property coverage for homeowners insurance, including:

  • All Risks
  • American Modern
  • Chubb
  • The Hartford
  • Homesite
  • Liberty Mutual
  • Travelers

Other insurers include the GEICO-affiliated Berkshire Hathaway Specialty Insurance, which targets high-value homes over $250,000 in replacement value on the U.S. East Coast, among other markets.

A standard homeowners policy usually covers the structure of your home, your personal belongings, liability, no-fault medical coverage, and additional living expenses. Different companies offer different levels of coverage and limits, and you can usually increase these as needed.

GEICO’s partner companies offer a range of insurance products, so the endorsements you can add to each one will be different. When you fill in the online quote, after being matched with the insurance company, you’ll be offered various optional coverage additions, and a chance to adjust your deductibles.

Home insurance policies vary significantly from one insurer to another. Write down a list of the coverage important to you before starting the quote process, to ensure you’re choosing a homeowners policy with everything you need

GEICO’s Cost for a Standard Policy

Unfortunately, we were unable to get a sample quote using our standard quote profile (see Methodology below). Based on the size of GEICO’s nationwide network of partner insurers and the size of their market share, though, there’s a good chance your quote will be competitive.

If you’re married or own your home with another person, provide information for both of you when you request a quote. Insurance companies will often check the credit scores of both partners, and this could help you save money.

Other GEICO Property Insurance Policies

Besides connecting shoppers to standard homeowners insurance, GEICO agents help match shoppers with property insurance for:

  • Condo/co-op
  • Mobile home
  • Renters insurance
  • Landlord
  • Wind/hurricane
  • Earthquake
  • Flood
  • Jewelry

GEICO Home Insurance Discounts

GEICO offers standard discounts for bundling your home and car insurance, as well as for common things like home security systems. It also offers additional discounts based on the underwriting guidelines of the home insurance partner. However, discount options vary by state and partner insurer, so you won’t know which discounts you qualify for until you’re matched with an insurer.

You may also be able to qualify for a military service member discount, although it depends on your state and the home insurance partner you’re matched with. An agent told The Balance over the phone that their goal is to offer you the best coverage and premium, which may be with a partner insurer that doesn’t offer a military discount.

GEICO Home Insurance Availability

GEICO has home insurance partners throughout the U.S. in all 50 states.

How to Get a GEICO Homeowners Insurance Quote

You can get a GEICO homeowners insurance quote in a few different ways:

  • Apply on the website
  • Use the GEICO app
  • Call (800) 241-8098
  • Speak to a local agent

GEICO’s online form will ask questions about your home, last roof replacement date, type of foundation, and other basic questions, after using public records to make some assumptions about your property. But to get a full quote, you’ll need to supply an SSN. You’ll then be matched with a suggested insurer. Unfortunately, this means you’ll need to get a quote before you’re able to investigate your matched-insurer’s history of customer satisfaction and financial strength.

If you don’t like your match or the policy offered, you can ask a GEICO agent to offer other insurers or policies. The agent can also tell you more about the insurance provider underwriting your quote. You can search for local agents on GEICO’s website in both English and Spanish, and review each agent’s personal page to see if they would be a good fit for you.

Of course, you should also do your own research before settling on an insurer, and perhaps even try getting a quote directly with the suggested insurer, if possible.

How to File a Claim with GEICO

If you have to file a home insurance claim with GEICO, you can contact your home insurance provider directly using contact info from GEICO’s website. Depending on the insurer, you may be able to file a claim online, or you may need to speak with an agent.

GEICO Customer Service

GEICO isn’t specifically ranked as a home insurer in most of the surveys and tools we use to assess customer service because it does not underwrite the homeowners insurance.

However, GEICO is ranked for its overall digital experience by J.D. Power. In the J.D. Power 2020 U.S. Insurance Digital Experience Study, GEICO was ranked No. 1 out of 19 insurers for digital service, indicating that its tools are well-suited for customers who perform online policy-servicing activities. However, it was ranked No. 21 out of 22 insurers in digital shopping, indicating they haven’t yet hit the mark where online insurance shopping is concerned.

If you want to make a change, pay bills, or view and print your policy or other details, you’ll contact your insurer directly. The phone numbers and hours vary by insurer, and are listed on the GEICO Review and Manage Your Policy page.

You might also be able to manage your policy online or with the app, or get general information by phone.

Unfortunately, we can’t give a clear review of GEICO’s home insurance customer service due to the variety of insurers. When you get a quote from GEICO, check the reviews and customer complaints for the insurance company underwriting.

Financial Stability

An insurance company’s financial stability is important because it gives you insight into their ability to meet their financial commitments when it comes to paying claims. Because GEICO doesn’t underwrite the homeowners insurance, you should investigate the stability and rating of the insurer you wind up with.

Other Types of Insurance Provided by GEICO

The company offers many kinds of coverage:

  • Vehicle: Car, boat, Mexico, motorcycle, ATV, RV insurance
  • Life insurance
  • Travel and overseas insurance (through affiliate GmbH)
  • Business insurance
  • Identity protection
  • Pet insurance
  • Umbrella insurance

Compare Other Home Insurance Reviews

The best way to save on homeowner insurance costs and make sure you are getting the best coverage possible is to shop around and compare your offers with at least three companies. Luckily, GEICO does a lot of this for you by shopping within a vast network of partners and trying to match you with a good price and coverage. However, you may still want to compare GEICO home insurance to other options, like:

Final Verdict
  • GEICO works with multiple insurers to provide a quote, but you won’t know which insurer or details of the coverage until you complete the online quote process.
  • You must investigate the insurer you’re matched with to learn about its complaint history, customer satisfaction, and financial stability.
  • Because GEICO offers a multi-policy discount, its homeowners coverage is a good option for people who have GEICO car insurance.

The Balance strives to give consumers unbiased, comprehensive reviews of homeowners insurance providers. To ensure that our content helps you make the right insurance decision for your needs, we review each insurance provider’s coverage options, discounts, customer service and satisfaction, and financial stability.

While we were unable to get a quote from GEICO, generally we look at the cost of a basic policy in a residential neighborhood in Illinois, a state where the average insurance premiums are close to the national average. We request a quote for the following profile:

  • 35-year-old applicant with a mortgage
  • Insured for five years
  • No claims
  • Arlington Heights, Illinois residential neighborhood
  • 1,500 square foot home
  • Built in 1971
  • $300,000 building value
  • $500,000 in liability
  • $1,000 deductible

We also include a number of other variables when asked, such as a 10-year-old roof upgrade. All of these factors were chosen to represent a consumer with an average home. Your situation may be quite different, but our quote is not meant to cover every kind of situation, but rather give a sample of what premiums could be with the insurer. We use the same profile for every homeowners insurance provider we review, to give the best chance of comparing providers’ costs across the board.
