Provided below is a summary of freelance writing rates that I've collected and distilled over the many years I've worked as a freelance writer and editor. I always refer to this list first when a client contacts me for a potential assignment, after which I look at the personal list I've comprised. Additionally, I take a look at the list of payment ranges I have posted on my website.

The ranges below begin with writers and editors with little or no experience who reside in a low cost-of-living area, and go all the way up to experienced writers and editors living in high cost-of-living areas (or those who have clients in high cost-of-living areas) and need to (or can) adjust their rates accordingly.

Of course, every assignment (and situation) is different, so proceed with caution when considering any freelance rate scale and take into account all the factors when determining your rates and what you can expect to be paid.

If you want additional guidance beyond this list, I often refer freelancers to the Editorial Freelancers Association because they keep a similar list on their website. Additionally, writers can check out bid sites, such as These sites show you what a project cost an employer previously, but keep in mind bid sites often (though not always) pay on the low end of the scale. Lastly, there many articles in my finances and money section which are aimed at helping freelancers figure out what they're worth and what clients are likely to pay.
