Examples of Freelance Writing Rates

Following is a summary of freelance writing rates that I've collected and distilled over the past decade that I've worked as a freelance writer and editor. This is the list I first refer to when clients contact me, followed by a more personal list that I keep. I also refer to a list of payment ranges that I've publicly posted on my website.

The ranges detailed here are for beginning writers/editors (no or little experience) who are in a low cost-of-living area, all the way to experienced writer/editors, and those who may adjust their rates based on their location (or their client's location) in a higher cost-of-living area.

Of course, as with every article about rates and pay, have caution. Every client and project has several factors which may account for some differences and discrepancies in rates and payments.

If you need further advice and reference past this list, I often refer new freelancers to the Editorial Freelancers Association, as they keep a similar list on their site. In addition, there are now several apps and websites that can help contractors set rates or budgets. One additional reference that writers may want to check are bid sites, such as Upwork.com. Although you can often see what a project has cost an employer, keep in mind that bid sites often (but not always) pay on the lower end of the scale. Lastly, I provide many articles in my finances and money section which are aimed at helping freelancers to figure out what they're worth and what clients are likely to pay.
