Microsoft has a free viewer for PowerPoint files called PowerPoint Viewer. This program can only view PowerPoint files, meaning you can’t add images, text, or other elements to the slides. You also can't make any changes to the presentation.

If you’re looking for free software to edit a PowerPoint file, see this list of free presentation software programs, free online presentation makers, or free Microsoft Office Alternatives.

What You Can Do With PowerPoint Viewer

When PowerPoint Viewer is opened, it immediately prompts to select a PowerPoint file. If you don’t have any other applications on your computer that opens PowerPoint files, then PowerPoint Viewer will be the default program to view them.

The program interface for PowerPoint Viewer is extremely simple. You can click through the slides, use the arrow keys, and open a small menu via the bottom toolbar or the right-click context menu.

You’re able to navigate through a slideshow like you would in PowerPoint, view the slideshow in full screen, copy a slide as an image file, and print some or all of the slides.

You can also open password protected presentation files with PowerPoint Viewer.

PowerPoint files that were created using PowerPoint 97 up to 2007, 2010, and 2013 can be viewed in this free PowerPoint viewer. This includes all the following file formats: PPTX, PPTM, PPT, PPSX, PPSM, PPS, POTX, POTM, and POT.

PowerPoint Viewer can be installed on Windows 10, 8, 7, Vista, and XP, as well as Windows Server 2008 and 2003.

Installing the Free PowerPoint Viewer

Visit Microsoft's Download Center to get a free copy of PowerPoint Viewer. The file is around 60 MB, so it could take some time to finish downloading.

You may be asked to install additional programs from Microsoft, but you can just click No thanks and continue to just get PowerPoint Viewer.

Just a few clicks are required during setup to finish up and install PowerPoint Viewer. No custom options need to be checked as the default settings are perfect.
