The U.S. Army Air Defense Artillery Center and Fort Bliss, Texas, is currently the Army's center for the education and training of Air Defense Artillery soldiers and units. It also hosts the Army's Sergeants Major Academy. The post has 1.1 million acres of land from the western tip of Texas north into New Mexico. The headquarters are located in El Paso,Texas.

Currently, Fort Bliss is in the process of the largest transformation in its history. $5 billion has been invested for construction of new top-of-the-line facilities for personnel and their families. Construction of new training ranges, offices, barracks and housing has begun. Services such as child care and youth programs, on-post shopping and entertainment facilities, medical and dental clinics are all being expanded to meet the needs of our growing community.

Mission - Team Bliss trains, sustains, mobilizes, and deploys members of the joint team to conduct global, full spectrum operations in support of the national military strategy, while providing for the well-being of the regional military community units of the 32d Army Air and Missile Defense Command, 11th Air Defense Artillery Brigade, the 4-1 Cavalry, the 204th MI Battalion, and the 978th Military Police Company.

Fort Bliss is located in the center of El Paso, off Interstate 10 on US Highway 54 (Patriot Freeway). Situated between the rugged Franklin Mountains and the historic Rio Grande, this border community has the advantages of a major city with the charm of a modern western town. El Paso is a major transportation hub with many cultural and entertainment opportunities.

Population: Fort Bliss is a diverse community made up of soldiers, family members, students, employees and retirees. The Fort Bliss area is home to 20,000 military personnel. In addition, Fort Bliss supports over 60,000 family members of active duty and retired personnel. Fort Bliss employs over 7,000 civilians.

Visiting / Living on Base

The Inn at Fort Bliss is the official temporary lodging facility for Fort Bliss. All incoming personnel must check availability of rooms at the Inn before taking temporary lodging in town.

The check in desk for Biggs is located at 1744 Victory Avenue on main Fort Bliss, just behind the Fort Bliss US Post Office.

The Inn has rooms and feature remote control cable color TV, in-room direct dial phones, full bath with tub/shower, in-room coffeemaker and individually controlled air-conditioning/heat unit. A complimentary continental breakfast is available each morning. Children stay free. 


GMH Military Housing has partnered with Fort Bliss for the purpose of improving the military family housing community. Fort Bliss has more than 3000 on-base family housing units. GMH Military Housing is responsible for the development, construction, renovations, maintenance and management of family housing at Fort Bliss.

If you move into GMH family housing you will need to sign a lease with GMH. This  may require payment of pro-rated rent for the current month.


Three elementary schools and one high school are located on Fort Bliss grounds. Chapin High School is near Fort Bliss. Bus transportation to off post schools is provided. All schools are part of the El Paso Independent School District.

Personnel living off post should be aware that there are also eight other school districts in the El Paso area. Personnel living in an area other than that designated as part of the El Paso Independent School district are required by law to send their children to the school district designated for that area. All nine districts have signed the memorandum of agreement.

Child Care

Child Development Services (CDS) provides many child care services at two Child Development Centers (CDC):

Family Child Care: Quarters-based Family Child Care FCC) services within certified homes offers a family atmosphere with fewer children, flexible hours and the ability of meeting special needs. Extended hour homes provide child care for parents needing routine evening child care, who work unusual or long hours, or have mission related child care needs that require child care service up to or in excess of 24 hours. This service meets the needs of dual and single service members needing child care at times the Center is not open.

Fort Bliss MWR

Medical Care

Thirteen private hospitals, one public hospital and one military hospital provide more that 2,300 beds for use by the Fort Bliss community. There are two designated trauma centers in the city.

Medical care for military personnel and family members is primarily met at William Beaumont Army Medical Center.  Built on property of over one-half million square feet, the hospital houses many departments and clinics which provide a full range of treatment and training capabilities.

In addition to the Medical Center, health care is provided at the Soldier Family Medical Clinic and at various Dental Clinics.

The William Beaumont mission also includes operation of the Army's first Residential Treatment Facility for substance and alcohol abuse and a regional trauma unit. Other activities include medical clinical investigations, preventive medicine, and mental health. Additionally, a full service Veterans Affairs Hospital is adjacent to the main hospital complex.
