Last-minute Christmas shoppers assume that all retail stores will have extended holiday store shopping hours in the final shopping days of Christmas Week, Christmas Eve, and Christmas Day 2015.  (And yes, there will be brick-and-mortar retail stores open with shopping hours on December 25, 2015.)  In fact, retail chains like Target, Macy's, Best Buy, Walmart and most all of the largest retail chains are offering early openings and late store closing times during Christmas Week.

Retailers are also giving last-minute Christmas shoppers a surprise with the extent of the extended holiday store hours in 2015.  But for die-hard Christmas shopping procrastinators, it's not a comfort-and-joy surprise.

Surprisingly, in a Christmas holiday shopping season defined by earlier-later-longer-no-boundaries extremes, the extended retail store hours in the final shopping days of Christmas Week and Christmas Eve are not really all that early, all that late, or all that long.

The best example of the lack of extensive extended Christmas Week shopping hours can be found in the marathon 24/7 shop-till-you-drop store hours.  During Christmas Week 2015, that's a really short list. All the 3:00 am Christmas shopping will be happening at Kohl's and Toys 'R Us in 2015, the only two retail chains besides the usual all-night supermarkets, convenience stores, and drug store locations that are 24//7 retailers year-round.

Looking back at the 2014 list of Extended Christmas Week Store Hours, we see that Macy's, Sears, and Walmart were also aggressively competing for that pre-Christmas 3:00 AM retail store foot traffic.  In Christmas week 2015, though, Walmart retail stores will have no desperate shoppers for at least six hours after its midnight closings (except for their 24/7 locations).

Macy's seasonal holiday temps will be sleeping in before a leisurely 8:00 AM store opening time.  The Sears 11:00 PM store closings are not even pretending to position the ailing and failing chain as a viable competitive retail Christmas threat.

One might think that Kmart and RadioShack would be clawing for every penny of cash register revenue in the final days before what might be their final Christmas retailing season. One might be wrong. Both Kmart and RadioShack seem to be making ho-ho-ho-hum retailing efforts just short of the Christmas finish line. So perhaps they know it's finished already?

Even though Christmas Eve offers the last of the last-minute retail shopping hours, the biggest Christmas shopping procrastinators really want to know what the extended retail store shopping hours will be on the day before and even the week before Christmas Eve.

The popularity of Christmas Week and Christmas Eve Eve is not just about last-minute flash sales (a/k/a Day-After-Christmas Clearance Sale sneak preview), and it's not just another example of Christmas Creep run amok.

Christmas Eve Eve is organically a popular shopping day because while December 24, 2015, offers the last Christmas shopping hours of the season, Christmas Eve Eve, December 23rd, offers the last of the late-closing extended shopping times.  Christmas Eve is all about early closing times, while Christmas Eve Eve is all about the shopping strategies which will yield the maximum shopping time in a 24-hour period.

In 2015 the largest U.S. retail chains are not nearly as aggressive with their Christmas Week and Christmas Eve Eve store hours strategies.  Looking at their relatively unextended extended store hours in the last days before Christmas 2015, one might think that the U.S. retail industry is content that its mobile and Internet sales results are good enough, and satisfied that its real-time last-second e-gifting alternatives are accessible enough that there is no need for retail extremes with competitive store hours strategies..

And then we remember that we're talking about the U.S. retail industry where "content" and "satisfied" are both antithetical concepts and career-limiting sentiments.   So, more likely, the less extreme Christmas Week and Christmas extended store hours choices are just about the numbers and the ROI calculation.  It's  most assuredly not about employee considerations or family holiday traditions.
