Esurance is an online discount insurer established in 1999 and is a member of the Allstate family and has a financial stability rating of “A+” from A.M. Best insurance rating organization. The company provides auto, motorcycle and renters insurance as a direct seller through its online website. Esurance offers auto insurance customers a way to reduce auto insurance premiums through its usage-based auto insurance program, DriveSense.

The telematics vendor partner for the Esurance DriveSense Program is Modus, a leading provider of insurance telematics solutions.

Esurance DriveSense Program Features

Through the Esurance DriveSense Program, auto insurance customers are able to save as much as 30% on policy premiums by allowing the company to monitor driving habits through an installed telematics device in the vehicle’s onboard diagnostics (OBD-II) port. This port is located under the dashboard right in front of the driver’s seat.

The DriveSense Program is available to customers in these states: Alabama, Arkansas, Arizona, Colorado, Georgia, Idaho, Illinois, Iowa, Maine, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, Nebraska, New Mexico, North Dakota, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, South Dakota, Texas, Utah, West Virginia and Wisconsin.

To sign up for DriveSense, existing customers can call 1-800-ESURANCE (1-800-378-7262) to enroll.

You will receive a 5% to 10% discount just for enrolling. The discount depends on your state. Your policy premium can be reduced up to 30% based on your safe driving habits, but never increased based on data collected from the telematics device installed in your vehicle. The program is available to policy holders with vehicles that are 1996 year models or later, non-hybrid and non-electric vehicles.

The driving metrics recorded and used to determine any discount applied to your policy include:

  • Mileage

  • Speed

  • Time of day

  • Acceleration

  • Braking

You can view your driving information on your personalized website. Once you take a look at your driving behaviors and analyze this information, you can make adjustments in your own driving that will help you save even more money on your auto insurance policy.

You keep the device installed in any enrolled vehicles for one full policy term. If you cancel your policy or un-enroll in DriveSense, Esurance will send you a prepaid mailing label to return the device. You will be charged a $100 non-return fee if you do not return the device.

Privacy of Personal Data

In the terms and conditions policy language regarding DriveSense, Esurance states, “You acknowledge that the Device will track driving activity and related information in the vehicle in which it is installed. This driving data will be collected and transmitted via cellular signal to a third party, who will then forward the driving data to Esurance. You consent to the collection and transmission of your driving data as set forth herein.”

DriveSense is a good option to try for Esurance auto insurance customers looking for auto insurance discounts and other ways to reduce their auto insurance premiums. If you are paying higher insurance premiums because you are considered a high-risk driver, it may be worth your time.
