Run by pet owners, Embrace Pet Insurance operates with a mission to “provide genuine support and certainty when pet parents need it most.” The company offers accident and illness insurance and wellness coverage with customizable plans, transparent pricing and exclusions, and multiple discounts.

Embrace makes it easy to build a custom pet insurance policy for your cat or dog. Choose from a deductible as low as $200, a maximum of $30,000 in annual coverage, and up to 90% reimbursement for your vet bills. Embrace also offers discounts for covering more than one pet, buying through voluntary employee benefits, and for current and former military members. A vanishing deductible for healthy pets is part of all policies.

We reviewed Embrace’s pet insurance coverage and exclusions, optional wellness rider, discounts, pricing, reviews, customer service, and more to help you determine if it’s right for you.

Company Overview: Customizable & Flexible Pet Insurance

As the winner of the 2003 Wharton Business Plan Competition, Embrace Pet Insurance received enough capital funding to sell its first pet insurance policy three years later. The company has since grown to offer customizable accident and insurance plans, wellness coverage, and an easy-to-use online portal and app.

Embrace lets you create a customized accident and illness policy by choosing your deductible, annual limit, and reimbursement percentage. You can also sign up for additional wellness coverage that lets you set aside funds for preventative pet services, including some that other wellness plans exclude.

Embrace’s pet insurance policies are underwritten by American Modern Insurance Group which has an A+ rating for financial stability from AM Best. Customer reviews are mostly positive, but with some complaints typically involving customers' confusion with policy exclusions, presumably for pre-existing conditions. Many customers praised how fast Embrace managed claims, along with its fast and friendly customer service.

Policies Available: Accident and Illness

Embrace offers accident and illness or accident-only insurance for cats and dogs.

Accident and Illness

Embrace’s online quote generator makes it easy to quickly build a policy that’s right for you. All you need to do is enter some basic information about your dog or cat and your location and you’ll get a recommended plan that includes your monthly premium payment. From there, you can mix and match your deductible, annual limit, and reimbursement to build a policy that fits your needs and budget.

After you sign up, Embrace will review your pet’s veterinary records and let you know if your pet has pre-existing conditions that won’t be covered. If you don’t like the policy, you can request a full refund within the first 30 days of coverage. If you accept the coverage, your policy will automatically renew annually and you won’t ever be dropped for any reason.

Embrace requires a 48-hour waiting period before filing a claim for an accident and 14 days before filing for an illness. Claims made within those windows will be denied. There’s also a six-month waiting period for claims related to orthopedic conditions in dogs, though you can shorten this to 14 days with an orthopedic exam.

If you need to file an accident and illness claim, you’ll be covered for:

  • Cancer treatment including chemotherapy
  • Chronic conditions (such as allergies)
  • Dental trauma
  • Exam fees (with wellness rider)
  • Genetic conditions (such as hip dysplasia)
  • Prescription drugs
  • Allergy testing
  • Alternative therapies (such as acupuncture)
  • CT scans, MRIs, X-rays, and ultrasounds
  • General, specialist, and emergency care
  • Hospitalization and surgery
  • Lab tests and biopsies
  • Physical therapy (such as hydrotherapy)

Embrace only offers accident-only coverage for newly covered pets 15 years or older. However, if your pet is already enrolled in an accident and illness plan, they can keep it for life and will not be dropped or switched upon reaching age 15. The accident-only plan is non-customizable, with $5,000 in annual coverage, a $100 deductible, and 90% reimbursement; coverage includes:

  • Bloat
  • Foreign body ingestion
  • Hit by car
  • Torn cruciate ligament
  • Poisoning
  • Cuts & lacerations
  • Prescription drugs for covered conditions

Embrace offers a full refund if you cancel your policy within 30 days as long as you haven’t been paid for any claims.

Other Add-Ons: Wellness Plan

Embrace offers you the option of adding a Wellness Rewards program to your accident-only or accident and illness policy. The wellness rider lets you set aside a specific budget similar to a flexible spending account (FSA) you can use to get reimbursed for routine wellness and preventative care services such as:

  • Routine veterinary visits
  • Grooming
  • Flea, tick, and heartworm meds
  • Fecal and routine blood tests
  • Microchipping
  • Medicated shampoos
  • Spay/neuter surgery
  • Routine chiropractic care
  • Massage and acupuncture
  • Teeth cleaning
  • Prescription diet food
  • Training classes
  • Vaccinations
  • Toenail trimming
  • Anal gland expression
  • Pet activity monitors
  • Cremation or burial

You can choose your annual limit of $250, $450, or $650. You will be reimbursed up to this amount for qualifying expenses each year. Of course, the higher the limit, the higher the cost of the coverage.

Embrace’s Wellness Rewards program is not a separate plan and can only be added to an existing policy. You can increase your annual limit anytime, but you will need to make a one-time back-payment for all months to the start of the existing policy. Funds left in your account at the end of the year are non-refundable and won’t carry over to the next year.

Unique Features: Prescription Coverage

Many pet insurance plans won’t reimburse you for the cost of prescriptions for covered conditions. This means you’ll have to absorb the expense of ongoing medications, which can be quite costly.

Fortunately, Embrace does offer coverage for take-home medications, including both FDA-approved drugs and natural treatments under the umbrella of the Homeopathic Pharmacopoeia, such as:

  • Antibiotics
  • Allergy medication
  • Insulin and supplies
  • Eye and ear drops
  • Oral chemotherapy
  • Steroids
  • Pain relievers
  • Anxiety medication

Embrace’s Wellness Rewards program also offers reimbursement for the following treatments and prescriptions related to preventative care and maintenance:

  • Flea, tick, and heartworm preventatives
  • Prescription diet food
  • Ear cleaning drops
  • Nutritional supplements
  • Medicated shampoos

Unique Features: Dental Coverage

Dental coverage, whether due to illness or injury, is often excluded from pet insurance policies. Embrace offers coverage for dental accidents up to the policy limit you choose and up to $1,000 annual coverage for dental illnesses.

Your pet’s teeth are covered for:

  • Broken, chipped, and fractured teeth
  • Extractions
  • Gingivitis
  • Root canals & crowns
  • Stomatitis
  • Periodontal disease

Plan Exclusions: Most Pre-Existing Conditions

Pre-existing conditions are the exclusion of nearly all pet insurance policies. Embrace, however, differentiates between curable and incurable pre-existing conditions.

Your accident and illness policy will cover medically necessary treatments if your pet goes 12 months without having symptoms or needing treatment for the following conditions:

  • Respiratory infections
  • Urinary tract/bladder infections
  • Vomiting, diarrhea, and other gastrointestinal disorders

However, Embrace will not cover treatments for the following conditions or related conditions diagnosed in your cat or dog:

  • Orthopedic conditions, illnesses, or injuries on the opposite side of a prior injury
  • Allergies
  • Cancer
  • Diabetes
  • Lipomas or skin lumps
  • Hyperthyroidism or hypothyroidism
  • Urinary or bladder crystals or blockages
  • Other chronic conditions

Other exclusions on the accident and illness plan include:

  • Breeding, whelping, and pregnancy
  • Injury caused deliberately by you or any other person or pet residing in your home
  • Injury or illness resulting from fighting, racing, cruelty, or neglect
  • Cosmetic procedures
  • DNA testing or cloning
  • Injury or illness from fighting, racing, neglect, cruelty etc.
  • Avian flu

While the accident-only plan is great for senior pets, it does come with some exclusions:

  • Illnesses
  • Breed-specific and genetic conditions
  • Congenital conditions
  • Chronic conditions
  • Cancer
  • Dental illness

Cost: Customizable Policies to Meet Any Budget

Embrace’s premiums are competitive with that of most other providers. Your price will vary depending on the deductible, reimbursement rate, age of your pet, the amount of coverage you want, and other factors. Make sure to use the quote estimator to get the most accurate quote for your pet.

To make the policy even more affordable, Embrace offers a number of discounts that can be stacked up to 25% in most states. These include a 10% discount for covering two or more pets, a 5% discount for members of the military, and a 10% discount if your employer offers Embrace Pet Insurance as a benefit.

Embrace also features a vanishing deductible, reducing your annual deductible by $50 for every year you go without requesting reimbursement for an accident or illness. You’ll also save $12 by paying your premiums upfront for the year which waives the monthly billing fee.

Customer Service: Phone, Mail, Chat, and a 24/7 Help Line

Embrace makes it easy to file claims or make changes to your coverage using its online portal or mobile app. You can also submit claims by email, fax, mail, app, or MyEmbrace. Embrace typically resolves accident and illness claims within 10 to 15 days and wellness claims within five business days.

Embrace offers email or phone support Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. and Saturday from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. EST. You also get access to a 24/7 help hotline for pet emergencies and general pet health questions.

Competition: Embrace vs. PetFirst

Another pet insurance provider that offers accident and illness coverage policies similar to Embrace is PetFirst.

Side-by side, the two stack up fairly evenly. Both offer customizable policies and wellness riders for roughly the same monthly premiums. Unlike Embrace, however, PetFirst’s wellness plan doesn’t cover prescription food. It also only reimburses you for a set amount per service depending on the annual limit you choose.

Despite the similarity in customization and price, we find that Embrace gives you more complete and flexible coverage than PetFirst, especially when it comes to the wellness rider.

Final Verdict: Flexible Pet Insurance for Any Budget

Based on our methodology, Embrace has solid accident and illness policies with some flexibility on pre-existing conditions and a wellness rider more generous than most.

Embrace impressed us with an easy-to-use policy builder that gave us accurate quotes and let us customize a plan with the coverage we wanted. We also liked the prescription and dental coverage offered in its wellness rider, both of which could save us a lot of money.

We would like to have seen Embrace offer even lower deductibles and options for coverage with no annual limit.

Overall, Embrace offers a lot of flexibility and customization for the money, as well as coverage that’s a bit above and beyond what you’ll find elsewhere. A vanishing deductible for healthy pets, multi-pet discounts, and automatic policy renewal demonstrate that Embrace is committed to being a partner in your pet’s care.
