Fiction Collective Two Catherine Doctorow Innovative Fiction Prize

A prize of $15,000 and publication by Fiction Collective Two, an imprint of University of Alabama Press, is given annually for a short story collection, novella, novella collection, or novel. U.S. writers who have published at least three books of fiction are eligible. Stephen Graham Jones will judge. Using the online submission system, submit a manuscript of any length, a brief bio, and a list of three previously published books of fiction.

American-Scandinavian Foundation Writing Fellowships and Grants

The American-Scandinavian Foundation (ASF) is the leading cultural and educational link between the U.S. and Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden. An American non-profit organization, the ASF works to build international understanding with an extensive program of fellowships, grants, intern/trainee sponsorship, publishing and membership offerings. The ASF is headquartered in New York City at Scandinavia House, a public forum presenting a wide range of exhibitions, films, concerts, lectures, symposia & family programs.

Fellowships of up to $23,000 and grants of up to $5,000 are given annually to poets, fiction writers, creative nonfiction writers, and translators for study and research in Scandinavia. For travel in 2016 and 2017, using the online submission system submit up to 15 pages of poetry, 20 pages of prose, or 10 pages of work translated into English (along with the original text), a project proposal, a project budget, a curriculum vitae, and three letters of recommendation.

Briar Cliff Review Writing Contests

First-place winners will receive $1,000 in each of the three categories and will be published in the Spring 2016 edition of The Briar Cliff Review. 

  • Short story/creative nonfiction word limit is 5,000. These should be typed, and double-spaced on 8 1/2 x 11 paper.

  • For snail mail submissions only: Send cover sheet with title(s), author's name, address and email (the cover letter is not needed for online submissions). Place the title, but no name on the actual manuscript.

  • Winning pieces are accepted on the basis of first-time rights.

  • Simultaneous submissions are accepted, but notify us immediately upon acceptance elsewhere.

  • Previous year's winner is ineligible.

  • All entrants will receive a copy of the 2016 edition of The Briar Cliff Review.

South Carolina Arts Commission Artist Fellowships

Two fellowships of $5,000 each are given biennially to a poet and a fiction writer or creative nonfiction writer. Writers who have been residents of South Carolina for two years prior to the application deadline and are not enrolled in a degree- or certificate-granting program are eligible. Submit two copies of up to 20 pages of poetry or prose.

Two prizes of $1,000 each, publication by Washington Writers Publishing House, and 50 author copies are given annually for a poetry collection and a short story collection or a novel. Writers who live in Washington, D.C., or in Maryland or Virginia within a 75-mile radius of the U.S. Capitol are eligible.

New Rivers Press Many Voices Project Competition

Two prizes of $1,000 each are given annually for a poetry collection and a book of fiction or creative nonfiction by an emerging writer. The winning works are published by New Rivers Press and distributed nationally through Small Press Distribution. Using the online submission system, submit a poetry manuscript of 50 to 90 pages; a collection of short stories, novellas, or personal essays of 100 to 200 pages; or a novel or memoir of up to 400 pages.
