That’s the percentage of higher education leaders who reported a decline in student enrollment during the 2020-2021 academic year so far, according to a new survey.

Seventy-three percent of the respondents also reported a decline in occupancy of school-owned housing during the same time frame, according to the poll from investment consultant NEPC’s Endowments and Foundations team. 

Higher education leaders are contending with uncertainty and difficult choices ahead, according to Sam Pollack, a partner in NEPC’s Endowments and Foundations team. Sixty-five percent anticipate that they will have to cut costs to decrease their spending this year, the poll said.

The American Council on Education last week asked Congress for $120 billion to help higher educational institutions recover from COVID-19 pandemic losses.
