Widely advertised U.S. car insurance brands include Progressive, Nationwide, Liberty Mutual, GEICO, Farmers, State Farm, and Allstate. They may have name recognition, but that doesn't mean consumers give them the highest marks for customer experience. As ranking authority J.D. Power reported in its latest consumer satisfaction survey, direct-to-consumer brands are growing in popularity.

2019 Top Ranked Car Insurance Companies by Region

The 20th annual J.D. Power survey was conducted from February through April 2019 and was based on responses from 42,759 auto insurance customers. Categories were overall satisfaction, policy offerings, price, billing process and policy information, interaction, and claims. The winners were:

California: Esurance

Runner-Up: Auto Club of Southern California Insurance Group

Central: Shelter

Runners-Up: Auto-Owners Insurance, Allstate

Florida: Allstate

Different things are important to different people. Refer to the citation for each region to get an interactive results chart that shows rankings for each individual factor.

Research like this can become especially important if you are moving to a new area. Your experience with your car insurance company in one place may not equal the experience elsewhere, due to varying factors by region.

You'll notice no one insurer dominated the country.

2019 Top Ranked U.S. Insurance Companies Overall

Based on the same sample of 42, 759 auto insurance customers, here are the winners ranked overall:

  1. Amica Mutual
  2. COUNTRY Financial
  3. Erie Insurance

USAA Insurance Had High Rankings in Many Areas

It is notable that USAA Insurance ranked equally in some regions to the award-winning recipient. However, because it is only open to the U.S. Military and their families, it is not considered for an award, which takes general accessibility into consideration. Regions where it matched, or even out-performed, the winner were:

  • California
  • Central
  • Florida
  • Mid-Atlantic
  • New England
  • North Central
  • Northwest
  • Southwest
  • Texas

So if you live in one of these regions and have military connections, USAA is definitely worth a look—particularly because they bundle in other types of insurance.

How to Use the Car Insurance Company Rankings

The rankings may open your eyes and help you evaluate if you're getting the best deal on your car insurance. Further research may reveal it's worth a potential penalty cost upfront so you can switch your car insurance company to save money on your car insurance over the long haul. Indeed, 72% of the respondents said they would switch insurers to save money.

Saving money and getting things done with no agent involvement are priorities for a growing number of auto insurance customers.

According to J.D. Power, 23% of car insurance customers in 2019 want empowerment and were bypassing agents by using do-it-yourself tools through the web and their smart phones. The expectation is for an easy way to get business done without having to get on the phone with an agent. These customers also reported the highest satisfaction with their car insurance experiences.

This completes our review of the 2019 J.D. Power Auto Insurance Satisfaction study which provided valuable insight into how consumers feel from state to state about the service and coverage they are getting from their car insurance company.
