If you're making a recipe that calls for black peppercorns, and you don't have any on hand, you can use ground black pepper instead. Here's how to get the substitution right:

  •  Ground black pepper

For every 8 peppercorns called for, use 1/8 teaspoon ground pepper in its place.

If the recipe calls for you to measure the peppercorns out with a measuring spoon, replace them measure for measure with ground black pepper. For example, one teaspoon of peppercorns would be replaced with one teaspoon of ground pepper.

Black peppercorns have more flavor and heat than ground pepper, so you may need to add more pepper to taste before serving your dish.
