Job seekers looking for jobs in retailing and retail employees looking for advancement in their retail career don’t just want to know which retail companies are hiring, they first want to know what is the BEST retail company to work for.  Finding the best benefits package and compensation is important when looking for the best retail job, but when looking for a “best” employer there are larger considerations like leadership, advancement opportunity, respect, recognition, and all the important aspects that combine to create the best jobs in the best workplaces.

This is according to Glassdoor.com, the world’s largest online review site where employees rate the best and worst of the companies they have worked for.   There are plenty of “experts" who have plenty of opinions about what makes an employer “the best,” but Glassdoor’s philosophy is that the best opinions about the best retail companies to work for would logically come from the employees who have personal work experiences with those companies.

Each year employees rank their employers and based on those rankings, Glassdoor creates an Employees’ Choice Award which is given to the companies with the highest average employee ratings of the year.

  Eligibility requirements to be included on the 2015 “Best Places to Work” list include:

  • At least 1,000 employees
  • At least 50 employee reviews in the previous 12 months
  • No incentive is given to employees for completing an online review
  • Only one review per employee per year submitted

This year’s 2015 Best Retail Employers list (below) is extracted from the comprehensive Glassdoor Employees’ Choice Best Places to Work list, which includes all companies in all industries.

 To be Included on the Best Retail Employers niche list, a company needs to have met all the Glassdoor criteria and also have retailing (either online or brick-and-mortar) as a significant part of its business activities.

Mission Statement Alignment

The retail companies that consistently find a place on all sorts of different "best practices" lists are the companies that have the most focused mission, vision and values statements which they expect their employees to not just recite, but also live and breathe.  Applicants who don't know - or are not sincerely aligned with - the Mission Statement of a "best employer" company will not have the "it" factor that hiring decision makers can spot in the first two minutes of an interview.

Job seekers who are not interested enough to learn things about both where a company has come from, and where it now currently resides, are not going to seem seriously interested in the company itself, and, in turn, won't get serious consideration from a "best company" that wants to hire employees with ownership.
