Best Retail Companies to Work For 2016-2005, Employees Rank Employers

Retail Job, Career Comparison for Retailers With Fortune Best Employer Rankings

Reprinted with permission from Google.com

It's fair to say that the retailing companies that have maintained a spot on the annual Fortune Best Companies to Work For list since 2006 are Retail Empoyers of the Decade.  When employees are the ones who are ranking employers in order to establish their "best" status, it makes the annual Fortune "best employers" list a credible retail career comparison for those seeking or changing retail jobs.

The best retailing companies to work for in 2016 are largely the same as the retaiingl companies that have been rated to be "best retail employers" for the past decade by the list makers at Fortune.   The reason for that is not necessarily because the leaders in the  "Best Retail Companies to Work For" like Zappos, Nordstrom, Publix, Google, and Build-A-Bear Workshop have mastered the art of workplace engagement, employee satisfaction and all things human resources.

The reason some of the largest U.S. retail companies have consistently maintained their "best company to work for" label for so long is because their leaders were savvy enough to know that factoring a fantastic benefits package into their employee compensation formula is key to attracting and keeping the best employees.  Additionally these "best retail employer" leaders have been smart enough to run a retail operation that's profitable enough to continually support that fantastic benefits package.

So, what qualifies a company to earn the label of being a "Best Company to Work For?"  Scroll down to the bottom of the page (after the ranking list) for an explanation of the Best Company to Work For evaluation methodoloty.

What follows is a list of the U.S. retail industry companies that were included on the Best Companies to Work for List compiled by Fortune Magazine for the past decade, along with their "best" ranking number for each of the years between 2006  and 2016.

An "N/A" indicates that the company was not included on the "Best Companies to Work For" list in that particular year.

This list provides easy identification of employee trends with individual companies.  It also helps to quickly identify retail companies which may not be the "best" places to work for today as they were in year's past.

According to the published criteria from Fortune, the "best" rankings are calculated based on two quantitative measurements:

  1. Trust Index Employee Survey results from a random employee sample from each company which evaluates management’s credibility, overall job satisfaction, and camaraderie.
  2. Culture Audit which includes pay, benefits, hiring practices, internal communications, training, recognition, and diversity.

According to Fortune the Trust Index Employee Survey numbers contribute 2/3 and the Culture Audit contributes 1/3 to each company's overall "best company to work for" score.  Rankings are then determined based on those scores, which allows for comparison of all U.S. companies from all industries.
