When you use a remote notary service, you aren't required to occupy the same physical space as the person notarizing your documents. Instead, you appear before a notary via webcam or the camera on your mobile device. The notary verifies your identity and applies an electronic seal to your signed documents. As of March 2021, 29 states have passed legislation permitting remote online notarization (RON).
The best online notary services feature intuitive online interfaces, charge reasonable fees, and offer volume discounts to businesses. They also provide customer support during notarizations and have notaries available at nearly all hours of the day allowing customers to get documents signed and notarized in minutes.

What to Look for in Online Notary Services
When reviewing companies, make sure the prices listed are for individuals and businesses, not notaries. Some service providers connect notaries to clients and the fees they list are what they charge notaries to use the platform, not what you'll end up paying as a consumer.
Also, look for companies that are transparent about fees, services, and limitations. Some service providers can't notarize more than one document per session, and some are unable to accommodate multiple singers in different locations. Other companies can't notarize self-proving wills. Check online or with a customer service representative to determine if the company you're considering can meet your needs.
Frequently Asked Questions
How Much Does an Online Notary Service Cost?
The services we reviewed charge individuals $19.95 to $25 per session, document, signature, or notary seal. Some service providers charge reduced fees for subsequent signatures and seals. Many providers offer business memberships, which provide discounts to companies with high volume notarization needs. Notary fees for home loan signings are usually higher than the fees charged for other notary work.
Are Online Notary Services Reputable?
Most online notary providers are reputable and offer a legitimate service. Although not all states permit state-appointed notaries to perform RONs, documents notarized online are legal and valid in all 50 states.
Before the COVID-19 pandemic, several states had passed legislation permitting RON, and legislation was pending in other states when the pandemic began. Since then, additional states have temporarily relaxed the requirement that individuals appear in person before a state-appointed notary.
While some states continue to prohibit notaries from performing RONs, all states recognize the legitimacy of documents notarized online. Online notaries are certified in states where RON is permitted, and the notary acts they perform are legally binding across state lines.
How Long Does It Take to Get Something Notarized Online?
Online notary services are typically much more efficient than either traveling to a notary or arranging for a mobile notary to come to you. Most of the providers we reviewed offer notary services that take between 10 and 20 minutes to complete.
We reviewed 15 companies offering remote notarization services. In developing our list, we considered several factors, including hours of service, user interface, cost, security features, and customer support services. Except for Pavaso, we chose not to consider companies such as DocVerify and SIGNiX that facilitate online notarizations but do not provide them directly.
