These select financial services firms get frequent mention in surveys as being among the best employers in the finance sector. Of course, one man's heaven is another woman's hell, so keep in mind that this list may be at least somewhat subjective. That said, here's a compilation of those who have consistently received good marks.

Big 4 Public Accounting Firms

These firms often receive high marks today, yet they have long histories of being high-turnover work environments where staff has been treated as disposable.

In any case, they can offer an excellent experience that can enhance a resume. Depending on opinion, they're generally said to include Deloitte LLP, PricewaterhouseCoopers, Ernst & Young, and KPMG.

Northwestern Mutual

Northwestern Mutual reportedly highly cultivates a loyal sales staff with a particular focus on developing lifetime employees. They have a reputation for hiring recent college graduates.

Prudential

This is another insurance company that turns up high on surveys of the best places to work. Like many of its peers, Prudential is a highly bureaucratic organization so it might not appeal to everyone for this reason.

Chubb

Chubb is a leading insurer that also regularly gets a favorable mention for its workplace policies and employee relations.

Goldman Sachs

Goldman Sachs remains the most respected name on Wall Street, and it's noteworthy for a high degree of employee loyalty and morale.

Of course, Goldman Sachs is also a firm that expects much of its employees, but it reciprocates with generous pay plans. Women should take note that Forbes magazine once reported that Goldman Sachs was the only leading Wall Street firm to respond to its request for statistics on female officers. It reported in 2009 that women's numbers had grown significantly in the past three years.

Female vice presidents, including executive directors, were up by 21 percent at that time and female managing directors were up by 45 percent. From all reports, this trend has continued.

Raymond James

This firm operates under a business model that maximizes financial advisor autonomy.

Banco Popular

Banco Popular is the largest Hispanic-oriented financial institution in the United States.

Wells Fargo

Although it's been the subject of a few scandalous rumors in recent years, Wells Fargo remains among the strongest of the large national banks. It also regularly receives strong marks for its employee development and retention programs.

Some Other Input

J.D. Power and Associates surveyed the best places to work for financial advisors based on a variety of factors, including compensation, job duties, problem resolution, and support. Edward Jones, Raymond James, Merrill Lynch, Wachovia Securities, Citigroup Global Markets and UBS Financial Services made this list.

FORTUNE Magazine also offers an annual list of the best companies to work for, many of which are in the financial services industry or have a need for financial talent. Some that made the most recent list include Credit Acceptance, Prime Lending, Acuity Insurance, True Wealth, Veterans United Home Loans, Edward Jones – which also made the J.D.

Powers list – and Quicken Loans.
