The Best Event Insurance for 2021

Best Overall : Travelers

Why We Chose It: Travelers is a reputable, long-standing insurance company that offers event insurance and provides online quotes.

What We Like
  • Bundling discounts offered

  • Online quotes

  • Customized event coverage

What We Don’t Like
  • Not available in all states

Travelers was founded in Saint Paul, Minnesota, in 1853 as an accident insurance company and later expanded and began selling life insurance, making it one of the first companies in the country to sell more than one type of insurance. Now, Travelers offers automobile, homeowners, boat, and renters insurance nationwide, in addition to specialty insurance including event insurance. It’s the second-largest writer of commercial property casualty insurance in the U.S.

The company offers wedding and event insurance in most states, on cruise ships, some Caribbean islands, and a few other countries. It offers bundling discounts if you already have or buy other policies such as auto insurance. You can choose custom coverage with add-ons such as general liability and liquor liability coverage. Custom coverage amounts and options can vary based on the size, location, and cost of the event.

You can also choose the Wedding Protector Plans which include cancellation and postponement coverage, lost deposits, additional expenses, wedding video and photos, protection of wedding gifts, special attire, and jewelry.

You can get a quote online or over the phone with an agent. You can also report a claim or pay your bill online, and the website is easy to navigate. Travelers has positive customer reviews overall and a solid industry reputation.

Why We Chose It: Allstate is an insurance industry leader with nationwide coverage and specific cancellation and postponement policies.

What We Don’t Like

You can get coverage for corporate events, engagement parties, weddings, business meetings, and retirement parties. However, athletic events, color runs, gun shows, bachelor parties, events at remote locations, and events with more than 500 guests are not covered by Allstate’s policies.

Prices vary based on location and type of coverage needed. Cancellation policies also include postponed events and are offered as standalone policies so you won’t lose your deposits if the event doesn’t take place or is delayed. You can get a quote online and will be redirected to the Markel website, Allstate’s partner for event insurance coverage.

Allstate is the nation’s largest publicly held personal lines insurer and has an A+ rating with AM Best.

Best for High Policy Limits : Philadelphia Insurance Companies

Philadelphia Insurance Companies

 Philadelphia Insurance Companies

Why We Chose It: Philadelphia Insurance Companies offers event coverage with customizable high policy limits and includes events other carriers don’t.

What We Like
  • Average policy limits are up to $4 million

  • Sporting events are covered

  • Music festivals and concerts are covered

What We Don’t Like
  • Events that go past midnight require two-day coverage

  • Lower limits aren’t offered

Philadelphia Insurance Companies was originally founded in 1962 and began operating under its current name in 1987. It's a specialty insurance company with insurance for nonprofit social services and health and fitness clubs at its core.

Nationwide, flexible, and comprehensive event insurance is offered with higher-than-average policy limits. This company specializes in events that other companies consider as too risky to insure, like most sporting events, music festivals, concerts, meetings, trade shows, and fairs.

If your event will exceed the high policy limits, you can add an umbrella policy to raise coverage limits, which is ideal for events at mansions, high-net-worth individuals, and events with expensive equipment. Cancellation and postponement coverage is offered, though there are some events that the company doesn’t cover, including live animal events, high-risk sports events, and amusement rides.

The company understands the different insurance needs of special events and tries to cater to the customer. Policies start at $175 in most states. You can apply, pay, and receive your certificate of insurance entirely online.

Best for Weddings : WedSure

Why We Chose It: WedSure offers top-rated wedding insurance with an instant certificate of insurance and an easy online application process.

What We Like
  • Backed by Allianz insurance

  • Covers some destination weddings outside the U.S.

  • Change of heart policy

What We Don’t Like
  • Some customers complained about denied claims

  • Cancellation coverage is only available as an add-on

WedSure was founded in 2011, but their parent company, Nuccio and Associates, was founded in 1991 in Los Angeles, California. It’s a completely online wedding insurance company with an A+ rating from AM Best.

The company offers quotes, applications, and certificates of insurance online and can be accessed anytime from anywhere. You can get immediate coverage, and a standard liability policy starts at $125 and includes damage to rented premises up to $1 million to $2 million, alcohol coverage, and up to $5 million in total coverage. You can purchase it as late as the night before your event or as early as two years beforehand.

In addition to a liability policy, you can add other policies including cancellation coverage, which also protects you if your wedding is postponed. This policy starts at $125 and covers nonrefundable deposits if the wedding is postponed or canceled due to reasons beyond your control, such as illness, injury, or extreme weather conditions.

Optional add-on coverage is plentiful on WedSure. You can choose to add coverage for gifts, jewelry, special attire, photography, video, weather insurance, and more. There is even an option to purchase coverage for professional counseling in case you’re having a hard time dealing with a canceled wedding.

Best Annual Policy : RVNA

Why We Chose It: RVNA covers a variety of events with competitive prices and flexible terms and offers annual policies.

What We Like
  • Annual policies offered for wedding planners and vendors

  • Affordable coverage

  • Online quote in seconds and insurance in minutes

What We Don’t Like
  • $2,500 deductible for property damage

  • Claims system is over the phone

RVNA is short for Robert V. Nuccio and Associates and was founded in 1990. The company is a leader in the industry, and the founder’s father wrote the first real estate agents and insurance agents errors and omissions policies in the United States. It was also the first insurance organization to offer completely online transactions and was ahead of the curve by offering customizable coverage instead of having to buy a prepackaged deal.

It offers more than 20 types of coverage from small events to large gatherings. It offers something that most other companies don’t offer: a full refund for an unused policy canceled at least 48 hours before the event. In addition, it offers terrorist coverage, which most others don’t offer, and if you throw multiple events per year or are an event planner or a wedding vendor, you can take advantage of annual event coverage policies.

Basic liability coverage starts at $95 and add-ons are available including cancellation and postponement coverage and liquor liability coverage. You can get a quote online or over the phone, but claims are only handled over the phone. Its interface is a bit archaic, and if you want to make a policy change, it must be done in writing.

Best for Customer Service : EventHelper

Why We Chose It: EventHelper offers event coverage with a focus on personalized customer service.

What We Like
  • Focus on personalized service

  • Competitive prices for minimal coverage

  • Customizable policies

What We Don’t Like
  • Policy limits may not be high enough for elaborate events

Starting as a small company in 2009 with one owner-operator, EventHelper has grown steadily ever since. It offers the same insurance coverage that the big companies offer but with the service of mom-and-pop shops. It offers coverage for thousands of events, weddings, and vendors.

Basic liability coverage starts at $66 and coverage for sporting events starts at $250 (not including participant coverage). In addition to liability insurance, it offers cancellation insurance and add-on coverage for special attire, jewelry, and gifts that protects against damage or theft.

Everything is paperless, and you can get a quote online or over the phone, as well as file a claim and manage your policy online. It only takes a few minutes to get a quote and get a policy and coverage can start immediately.

The company focuses on customer service that is knowledgeable and personalized, and customer reviews reflect the high levels of customer service.

Final Verdict

The event insurance companies that made our list represent the best in the industry and are made up of small and large, well-known and unknown companies. Some offer excellent customer service, others cover almost any event, and some still process claims the old-fashioned way.

All of the event insurance companies that we recommend are reputable and offer top-notch coverage, but we recommend checking out Travelers first. They’ve been in business for years, are reputable, and offer customized event insurance policies.

Frequently Asked Questions

What Is Event Insurance?

Event insurance is a type of specialty insurance product that protects against possible financial losses during the event. So many things can go wrong, from lost or ruined jewelry and attire to someone getting injured or weather or illness issues. You want to have coverage to protect yourself, your money, guests, and vendors.

Event insurance typically includes cancellation coverage and event liability coverage. The cancellation coverage may reimburse you for your deposits and other fees if the event is delayed or canceled. Event liability coverage helps protect you against property damage or bodily harm caused during your event. Both types of coverage are important for any type of event.

How Much Does Event Insurance Cost?

Insurance prices vary greatly based on several factors, and the same goes for event insurance. The price depends on how long you need coverage for, the policy limits, event type, event location, size of the event, and the risk factors involved. Expect to pay at least $66 for liability coverage and an additional $125 for cancellation coverage, plus more for any add-ons.

How Does Event Insurance Work?

Event insurance is different from other insurance policies like automobile or property insurance because it is only for a short period of time, usually one to two days. You can typically purchase the event insurance a day or more before your event and the coverage will expire after your event is over. There isn’t normally any waiting period for coverage and you can print out proof of insurance immediately after paying for the policy.

Why Should I Get Event Insurance?

You should get event insurance for the following reasons:

  • Protect yourself from potential litigation
  • Protect yourself from potential financial loss
  • Relieve stress if the event is canceled
  • You won’t lose your entire deposit if the event is canceled or postponed
  • Peace of mind knowing you're covered if there’s a mishap

If you’re unsure if you need it, consider calling one of the companies on our list to speak with a representative about your event.
